Welcome to Hooked on Cycling Holidays and our cycling holiday in Slovenia which we have named City to Sea. This biking vacation in Slovenia is available as a self guided level 2 cycling holiday which can be started any day of the week. This tour is available as a 7 night tour but you can add a 3 night extension to the start of the tour and start in the world famous town of Bled. The City to Sea cycling tour follows a southwesterly direction from Ljubljana the Slovenian capital to Koper very close to the border with Italy. The terrain is fairly easy making this a tour suitable for beginners and we have graded the tour a level 2 tour even though the last day is a little longer.

Day 1 ARRIVAL TO LJUBLJANA.
Arrival in Ljubljana and your chance to explore the capital. Today you will have your bike hand over meeting and meet our representative in the late afternoon. The main attractions today in the Slovenian capital are the old town centre, and the lovely “fin de siecle” mansions, which are mighty fortresses above the city.
Day 2 LJUBLJANA - VRHNIKA 25 miles 40 km; 36 miles 58 km with a detour
Todays cycle tour goes across Ljubljansko Barje a large flatland and former marsh area surrounding the capital. Today the terrain in mostly flat. Today you can take a short walk into Iski Vintgar gorge nature reserve, see the remains of the world's highest railway viaduct in Borovnica., For the Museum fans a lovely technical museum of republic of Slovenia where there’s a g reat hunting collection and an exhibition on Titos’ cars.
Day 3 VRHNIKA – POSTOJNA 22 miles 34 km , 28 miles 44km with a detour
A slightly hillier day using side roads with some flat sections across typical Carst fields. You will also cycle through the nature reserve Rakov Škocjan which is an ideal place for a picnic. Today you see some of the real Slovenia , you will be away from main tourist routes and off beaten track.
Day 4 POSTOJNA – ŠTANJEL 28 miles 45 km 34 miles 55 km with a detour
Today is an easy route with one long descent but some small hills afterwards. You will have a possible detour to Predjama castle. The last Slovenian knight once owned it. Learn about his romantic destiny as you walk around this fabulous castle. Also you can visit the Postojna caves, a world famous attraction, so far nearly 30 million visitors! Beautiful lime stone formations, not forgetting to mention the unique “human fish”!
Day 5 DAY OFF IN ŠTANJEL OR ROUND TRIP 18 miles 30 km
Day of rest in Štanjel, village which is really in itself a museum of well kept old houses. In the wider area of this region was known its world war 1 fights of Isonzo front, you can see different touching monuments. Maybe if you like art then visit the gallery of local artist and painter in a typical Carst village.
Day 6 ŠTANJEL – LIPICA 23 miles 37 km
Today you cycle along mostly flat minor country lanes with only one longer but gradual climb.
Today your main attractions are the botanical garden in Sežana a stud farm in Lipica and an unusual but very interesting “war museum” set in a village tower of Lokev. If possible visit the Lipicaner horses, known from Vienna Spanish riding school and even watch the show if lucky.
Day 7 LIPICA – TRIESTE – KOPER 38 miles 60 km
Today a long cycle downhill from the Carst high plateau to Trieste. Today the main attraction is Trieste which was once an important port with its worldly flair and atmosphere. All the world cultures have once left a mark in this city. You can visit the castle, cathedral and Piazza Unita central square. Then it is onto Koper which is an “island” town above the Adriatic.
Day 8 Departure from Koper.
An easy return trip is possible by train to Ljubljana. Additional nights may be booked in Koper or Ljubljana
3 Night Extenstion:
Day 1 BLED
Individual arrival to Bled. Bled is known for it’s beautiful setting, lake, castle on the rock above the lake and a pilgrimage church on the island.
Day 2 BLED – RIBČEV LAZ (BOHINJ) 20 miles 32 km
Cycling downhill, at the foot of Mount Triglav. One climb of around 150m / 500ft. Triglav National Park is a very peaceful area.. Admire the stunning mountain scenery at the end of the Krma valley, why not have lunch in the mountain hut there. You will see, touching monuments from World War two and old farm houses, one has been transferred into a museum, which was visited by Prince Charles!
Day 3 RIBČEV LAZ (BOHINJ) – ŠKOFJA LOKA 32 miles 52 km
First a bus transfer to the Pokljuka high plateau. From here you cycle descending down to Bohinj valley, place of unique beauty of nature and tiny villages in Alpine valley. First flat, then a slow climb up to Jelovica High plateau, pass of 750 m / 2400 ft.
Day 4 ŠKOFJA LOKA – LJUBLJANA (32 km)
Long downhill biking trip, than flat crossing Sora field.This night is night 1 or our stardard 7 night trip above.
