Austria - Cycling Innsbruck to Munich

Welcome to Hooked on Cycling Holidays and our Cycling Holiday in the Tyrol and Bavarian Borders.This biking vacation in Bavaria takes your from the Tyrol region of Austria along wonderful cycle ways to the beautiful unique region of Bavaria. This cycle tour is available as a 6 night self guided cycle tour of which we have graded as a level 2 tour. Imagine towering mountains with deep gorges and yet the Tyrol and Bavaria are two regions so similar and yet so different. You will be cycling at the foot of breathtaking mountains, grim fortresses and gorgeous monasteries, every bend of the cycle path offers new, breathtaking views. Firstly the green coloured River Inn winds through this part of Austria boasting to have the most mountains. The beautiful Zillertal valley, crystal clear lakes and the young, turquoise Isar will enchant you. Then in the clear air, enjoy the atmosphere of rural inns and embrace the feeling of unspoiled nature. Similar and yet so different, but both regions Tyrol and Bavaria can pride themselves of imposing mountain scenery, clean air, unpolluted water and most importantly truly great hospitality!

All in all an easy tour. Mostly cycle paths of the river valleys of the Inn and Isar. Only a few, short ascents. Cycling on lovely cycle paths and minor roads with only a few main roads for short distances
Biking vacation in Bavaria

Day 1 - (Sunday) Arrival at Innsbruck
On arrival visit the world famous old town with the Golden Dachl (Golden roof built by Maxmillan) or the Bergisel ski-jump. in the early evening you will have your welcome meeting and hand over of rental cycles.

Day 2 - (Monday) Innsbruck – Strass/Zillertal   30 miles 48 km
Today you cycle on the flat cycle way of the river Inn alongside the steep walls of the Kawendal National Park of the northern alps, soon you will cycle through the salt town with its historic coin museum and on to Wattens. Visit Swarovski Kristallwelten and be enchanted by the glittering fascinating crystals. Then back onto the Inn cycle path along the river Inn you cycle passing Schwaz with its silver mine museum and onto the bicycle village of Strass at the entrance to the Zillertal Valley.

Day 3 - (Tuesday)  Excursion into the Zilltertal Valley 0-38 miles , 0 – 60 km
Always in full view of the fascinating mountains of the Zillertal main ridge with more than 3.000 m high giants, you easily cycle along the Zillertal bicycle path to Mayrhofen. Maybe you even fancy a trip to the glacier by cable car. Back you cycle always slightly downhill. If you do not fancy the cycle back just relax around the town or maybe take a walk or swim in the river and take the train back later.

Day 4  (Wednesday) Strass/Zillertal – Bad Tölz  35 miles 55 kmBeautiful Lakes and Mountain holiday
Today you will take the unique old steam-rack-railway to climb the ascent to lake Achensee. Along the lake you will cycle through green forests, meadows and see the impressive Sylvenstein lake. Then through natural forests, surrounded by steep rock walls you will feel as if you were transformed back in time, when men did not influence the nature with technology. Now with the green/ turquoise waters of the young River Isar you cycle to Bad Tölz. This town was important as the  crossroad of two ancient trading routes. Richly decorated houses still pay testimonial to the prosperous past. You have now cycled into Germany and the region of Bavaria.

Day 5 (Thursday) Excursion lake Tegernsee    0 – 25 miles , 0-40 km
Rich people from Munich try to settle here, an idyllic, clear water, calm atmosphere, lovely lake panorama of  lake Tegernsee. Along the Gaißbachtal you cycle back to Bad Tölz. Here the thermal waters of the spa Alpamare wait for you to refresh tired muscles. Afterwards a nice stroll on the old market place of Bad Tölz offer nice insights into the traditional Bavarian lifestyle.

Day 6 (Friday) Bad Tölz – Munich/Grünwald   29 miles 45 km
You approach Munich, capital of Bavaria via Geretsried and Wolfratshausen to Grünwald. Only a few short ascents lay between you and your final destination Munich. Take your time to do justice to the numerous places of interest along the route.

How to get there
By plane to Innsbruck airport or Munich airport and then by train to Innsbruck
Return Journey
Each Sunday transfer from Munich/Grünwald to Innsbruck at about 16:30. Cost per person inc. bicycle € 45,- paid locally but reservation in advance needed.
