Welcome to Hooked on Cycling and our cycling holiday in Hungary. This biking vacation in Hungary is a fabulous cycling  tour around Lake Balaton and its surrounding area. This area around Lake Balaton is ideal for a cycling holiday, cycle ways on the south of the lake and quiet country lanes to the west and north of the Lake.  Hungary outside of Budapest is generally  little explored by the tourist allowing particularly cyclists to experience cultural, historical, folk and architectural pleasures little seen in other countries.  The regions of Hungary and hugely varied giving many scenic delights. Lake Balaton is central Europe’s largest lake and is known as the “ Hungarian Sea” . The water in the summer months is wonderfully velvet and smooth and very tepid quickly reaching 20-26C during the summer months. The lake has many sandy beaches allowing you to relax before , during and after your days cycling. Lake Balaton is to the south west of Budapest around 3 hours by train . Some sections around the lake have been developed for tourists whereas the north side region is less explored. This tour should be suitable for first time cycle tourists and also for the regular cyclist.

Day 1 Balatonfenyves
Arrival at Balatonfenyves a village on the south coast of the lake and a short 3 hour train ride from Budapest. Now you can also fly with Ryanair to Balaton itself.

Day 2 Balatonfenyves to Keszthey 25 miles 42 km ( optional ride of 8 miles 12 km)
A beautiful cycle ride to Keszthely a wonderful bathing town. It is also a cultural centre for the region. The great Festetics Palace can be seen which has many concerts during the summer. Now you can explore Keszthely. Afterwards a possible extension ride to the world famous Heviz Spa with your chance to bathe in this wonderful resort.

Day 3 Keszthely-Badacsony 38 miles 60 km
You will ride on the shores of Lake Balaton through Balatongyörök, Szigliget to Badacsony.On the road you can enjoy one of the most beautiful view of Hungary, walk up the ruin of the a fortress in Szigliget hill, swim in the lake, and test the famous wines of Badacsony and take a voyage backward to Keszthely, where you stay overnight.

Day 4 Keszthely to Sumeg 19 miles 35 km
A ride to the hilltop fortress of Sumeg and then onto the Vineyards to taste the local wine .

Day 5 to Nagyvazsony 30 miles 50km
A ride through the upper region of the Lake where you will cycle passing a medieval castle. Explore the superb surroundings before continuing to Nagyvazsony

Day 6 Nagayvazsony to Balatonfured 18 miles 30 km
A ride to the Tihany peninsular and its 900 year old abbey. Through a stunning National Park and onto Balatonfured.

Day 7 Balatonfured to Balatonfenyves 30 miles 50km
A boat ride today to start with across to the south shores of the lake before a pleasant ride back to your tour start.

Fly to Budapest and catch local train to Lake Balaton ( Budapest - Lake Balaton approx 22 Euro )
It is also possible to fly to Lake Balaton itself with Ryanair.
