Welcome to Hooked on Cycling Holidays and our cycling holiday in Slovenia. We have named this cycle tour our cycle and wellness tour. This Slovenian biking vacation is available as a self guided level 1-2 cycling holiday which can be started any day of the week. The cycle and wellness cycling holiday follows a circular direction from Maribor in the north east Slovenia. This region is so famous for its spa towns. The terrain is fairly easy making this a tour suitable for beginners. This cycling holiday will take you through the northeast of Slovenia. Accommodation in hotels and Inns where you can relax after days’ cycling. Cycling through vineyards, passing wine cellars with great white wine or taking a snack in a little roadside inn! Those who have only passing interest in wine may be more interested in old towns, mighty castles, stork nests on chimneys and much more.

Day 1 ARRIVAL IN MARIBOR.
Maribor is the second largest Slovenian town with a lovely old centre. Maribor has a wonderful summer festival on the banks of Drava River. Free parking for the duration of your cycling trip if you happen to have a car.

Day 2 MARIBOR – PTUJ 20 miles 32 km
Today our cycle tour goes across the Ptuj fields, along the banks of the Drava. It is a flat day today. The town of Ptuj is the oldest Slovenian town with Roman ruins, temples and a medieval castle with a wonderful collection of old musical instruments and history of Turkish raids. You must try and sample the local white wine Traminec. Tonight we usaully stay in a 4 star hotel.
Day 3 PTUJ – JERUZALEM 24 miles 37 km
Our cycle tour today goes first across the plains which are flat before the last 8 km are a little hillier with one sharp climb of 100 m / 330 ft. Your accommodation tonight is a nice 2-star country inn set in the vineyards and you’ll love the room with a view. Included is wine tasting in the house cellar!
Also today you can see Dornava and Nedela baroque castles, a wine cellar in Ormož , known for white wines. Ormož is on the border with Croatia, should you wish, you could visit the neighbouring country by simply crossing Drava Bridge.
Day 4 JERUZALEM – MORAVSKE TOPLICE 28 miles 45 km
Today a few hillier sections in the morning but later flat. Your accommdation is a 4 star hotel which is part of the Terme 3000 complex in Moravske Toplice. This is a traditional Slovenian vineyard area with beautiful countryside and scenery. Jerusalem has a wonderful church. Along the way visit the floating mill of Bogojina, pottery workshop in Filovci and the modern church in Bogojina.
Day 5 MORAVSKE TOPLICE (Rest day or roundtrip of 31 miles 50km).
Take an easy trip towards the Hungarian border and visit Bukovnica Lake, it has bioenergetical effects! Enjoy a cup of coffee with tasty pastry in Lendava or cycle a couple of kilometres through Hungary. Maybe you fancy just to relax today.
Day 6: MORAVSKE TOPLICE – CERKVENJAK (41 km).
First part flat followed by gentle rolling hills. Price includes wine tasting!
As you head back westward you will stop at Murska Sobota Castle, which houses a regional museum with an interesting exhibition devoted to the culture and traditions of the Prekmurje region. You will then cross the River Mura on an old fashioned float before cycling across low green hills, stopping for a picnic beside a tranquil lake. You will end the day in the small settlement of Lenart, set amid the center of the Slovenske Gorice Hills with beautiful surroundings and the spire of the lovely Church of St. Lenart, which was also used as a walled fort against the invading Turks, standing proud over the village.
Day 7: CERKVENJAK – MARIBOR (35 km).
Sauerkraut and blood sausages: for your final day you can take a leisurely ride through more vineyard covered hills and quaint rural villages and farms. Soon you will join the Malečnik wine road that leads into Maribor. Although this is predominantly white wine territory, there are a couple of very good reds. Stop in the small village of Vodole just on the outskirts of Maribor, where you can have lunch in one of the tourist farms serving up grilled blood sausages with sauerkraut.
Day 8 DEPARTURE FROM MARIBOR.
