Tour Details

A wonderful self-guided cycling holidays through Germany along the River Rhine.  You shall explore three separate regions, the Alsace, Baden and the Palatinate. The mild climate of this European area means it is ideal for winegrowing, but you shall not only be able to sample wine but also immerse yourself in the history and culture along this section of the River Rhine.  It was actually the Roman’s who brought winegrowing to this region.  In terms of food, you will enjoy a large variety here. The historic delights that the German emperors left behind can be found in Strasbourg, Worms and Speyer. Once experiencing the Rhine we are sure you will wish to return and continue north along the Rhine on our trip from Mainz to Cologne.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Strasbourg

Today make your way to Strasbourg where you can spend a wonderful evening in the Alsatian capital with its many canals and unique atmosphere. There are many historic delights to explore.

Day 2Strasbourg to Rastatt  40.5 miles 65 km.

Today you cycle along a wonderful cycle path which takes you through the town to the Rhine’s river bank. You will cycle comfortably along the Rhine through the gentle Rhine valley. In Drusenheim, you will take a ferry to the other side of the Rhine and then continue to cycle through the charming meadow landscape until you get to Rastatt with its baroque old town.

Day 3Rastatt to Germersheim 35 miles 55 km.

Today you cycle along an idyllic route through what seems like untouched nature. Then you head through the biggest nature protection area in the Palatinate, the Hördter Rheinauen until you get to the former fortress city of Germersheim. The newly formed Rhine river bank and the unhurried centre of Germersheim can be enjoyed during the evening.

Day 4Germersheim to Heidelberg 31 miles 50 km

You continue your cycle tour along the Rhine. The Old Father Rhine brings you to the Imperial city of Speyer with its impressive UNESCO world heritage cathedral. The famous ensemble of the palace and palace gardens in Schwetzingen are further highlights of the tour before your day comes to an end in the oldest German university town in Heidelberg.

Day 5Heidelberg to Worms 28 miles 45 km.

You will cycle along the river Neckar to the old Roman town of Ladenburg with its beautiful medieval inner city. Then you will continue your tour through the Rhine valley to the imperial city of Worms with its cathedral built in the 12th century, the Martin Luther monument and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe.

Day 6 Worms to Nierstein 34 miles 55 km.

Today you shall continue your cycle tour along the river Rhine. Lots of agricultural views will accompany you on this stage. Everything that tastes good gets grown here! At times you will cycle along the old Rhine today and then soon afterwards you will end up on the other side of the river bank where you will see some of the first vines grown here. Afterwards, there are only a few more kilometres and then one more crossing over the river Rhine until you get to the charming winemaking village, Nierstein. You should definitely try a glass of Riesling in the evening!

Day 7Nierstein – Mainz 12.5 miles 20 km.

Today’s stage is short giving you lots of free time to enjoy Mainz on arrival. Shortly after Nierstein, the cycle path goes through more vineyards. Take a view across the Rhine valley to the impressive steep winegrowing slopes. The large wide river is the lifeline for this region. The cycle path runs along the Rhine’s riverbank and then into the centre of Mainz. The imperial cathedral as well as many other attractions are the magnets attracting many visitors here from both close and far away.
