Welcome to Hooked on Cycling Holidays and our cycling holidays in Austria. This cycling holiday is around Lake Constance which is locally known as Lake Bodensee which is situated between the countries Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This biking vacation is ideal for the untrained cyclist or family cycling as it follows the lake cycleway around Lake Constance. During this cycling tour, you will visit three countries, your tour will start in the western region of Austria, soon you will be cycling through Switzerland before progressing across the Lake to Germany and eventually back into Austria. This cycling holiday is for 5 or 7 nights and is a level 1-2 tour meaning some days are level 1 graded and some level 2 graded.

Lake Constance lies between the Austrian, German and Swiss Borders and has some of Europe’s most stunning scenery as its backdrop and also some glamour within its neighbouring towns. Your general tour will encircle most of the lake in a clockwise direction allowing you to sample the pleasures at your leisure. You will find this a fabulous relaxing cycling holiday. The cycle route around the Lake is one of Europe’s most popular cycle-ways.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to Bregenz

Individual arrival at Bregenz on the east shores of Lake Bodensee. After booking into your hotel pick up your bikes ready for the first days cycling. Relax in this wonderful town on the Austrian side of Lake Constance. Bregenz is famous for having the largest open air stage in Europe. Also to view is Martins Tower built it 1599 now housing a local museum. On the outskirts of Bregenz is the large range of hills the Pfander mountain giving wonderful views across the Lake.

From 17th July to 18th August you may stay in a nearby town due to the festival in Bregenz

Day 2Bregenz to Guttingen / Romanshorn 28- 35 miles 45-56 km

Today you cycle along beside the lake in a clockwise direction through the nature reserve Rheinsplitz. Today you are on the Swiss banks of Lake Constance. Rorschach is a magnificent port town with a very old monastery of St Gallen. The old town is a must to walk around with historic streets and merchants’ houses. If you decide to take a look at St Gallen you can take the railway there, see the impressive church and library of the old monastery. Then you cycle through Arbon which is on a site of a castle built by the Romans in the 3rd century and later altered in the 1500’s. If you are interested in Art why not visit the Martinskirke with its Gothic Bell Tower and 18th-century town hall.

Day 3Guttingen / Romanshorn to Gailingen / Ramsen 39-46 miles 63-73 km

Today you cycle along the south side of Lake Constance passing the town of Constance. Before you reach Constance visit Castle Seeburg with its beautiful park in Kreuzlingen. Today is a long day in the saddle so time in Constance can be taken in a few days’ time when you return. Now you cycle on the south side of the Untersee and along the south bank of the Rhine river to your overnight.

Day 4Day 4 Loop ride to Schaffhausen and Rheinfall 22-27 miles 35-43 km.

You continue on the Rhine cycle path downstream to Schaffhausen where you can visit Munot Fortress and see the largest waterfalls in Europe Enjoy a boat trip up close to the falls. 

Day 5 Day 5 Gailingen / Ramsen to Constance/Kreuzlingen 35 miles 56 km

Today you cycle along the Lake on the peninsular Höri to Radolfzell and onto Allensbach. Passing the “Klosterinsel Reichenau” which is famous for the monastery (UNESCO world heritage) and for its vegetable growing (round island trip + 15 km). Then further on to Constance/Kreuzlingen. On arrival in Constance enjoy some time exploring this wonderful town. There are many museums in Constance but also take a look at the minster with of course the usual ancient crypt.

Day 6Constance/Kreuzlingen to Friedrichshafen 22 miles 35 km by bike and a short boat trip.

A cycle ride to Staad and onto the famous flower Island Mainau. Here you will have time to visit the fabulous Island. Then after your visit, you return back and its then by ferry from Staad to Meersburg on the north shore of Lake Constance with its historical old village. The last section takes you alongside the lake east to Friedrichshafen where you can visit the Zeppelin museum.

Day 7to Bregenz 24 miles 38 km

Today you cycle along the lakeshore again back to Bregenz where you cycle through the nature reserve and maybe visit the Island at Lindau. The Monfort castle is well worth a visit which was constructed between 1290 and 1780 and was the seat of the Earls of Vorarlberg

Day 8Tour Complete

Your holiday is complete after breakfast or maybe extend your visit with some extra nights.

Fly to Munich or Memmingen and then take a train to Bregenz (2.5 hours) or fly to Zurich and train to Bregenz (1.5 hours).
