Welcome to Hooked on Cycling and our self-guided cycling holiday by bike and boat along the classic River Danube route from Passau to Budapest and return.  You shall be aboard the MS Primadonna which is the second-largest cruise ship on the Danube. You shall experience the elegance of the MS Primadonna, with spacious decks, spa facilities, restaurant, bar, atrium and much more, on a cycling holiday without hotel changes! The Primadonna will await you at your destination every day.

You can also feel free to spend some of your days on board should you wish to not cycle, where you can enjoy the Jacuzzi on the outdoor deck or in the spa area, which is equipped with Jacuzzi, sauna, Kneip basin, etc. All meals on this Austrian cruise boat are freshly cooked and have a particular emphasis on regional and organic products. MS Primadonna

Your luxurious cruise ship. The luxurious cruise liner, the only one on the Danube to fly the Austrian flag, was built in Germany in 1998 and underwent a general overhaul in 2009. The spacious facilities, the hotel hall is 60 metres long,  is a lively place to meet people and socialise and includes the panoramic restaurant “Primagusto”, the panoramic bar “Primaaperitivo”, the Danube arena “Primavista” and the “Primatheatro”. There is air conditioning on the entire ship (and are individually adjustable in the cabins). This the second largest Danube cruise ship is 113.5 metres long and 17.4 meters wide.

The architecture makes a stay on the MS Primadonna a first-class experience, with the interesting double-hull design (catamaran), the 6-metre high bow, as well as a glass floor in the reception, which draws one’s attention to the underwater world. There are a Jacuzzi, sun chairs and cosy seating arrangements on the outdoor deck. The spa area offers a large, indoor Jacuzzi, a Kneip pool and a sauna. Massages are available by advance reservation.

Cabins:

All 80 Cabins on the MS Primadonna are outside cabins with individually adjustable air conditioning, with shower and toilet, hairdryer, satellite television, telephone, mini-bar and spacious wardrobes.

The main deck cabins are approx 12 m2 and are equipped with a large, unopenable porthole. The spacious cabins on the upper and promenade decks are approx. 16 m2 and are equipped with a balcony with bench seat

Gastronomy

Sophisticated, international standard with specialities of the Danube countries, especially Viennese cuisine. The meals are prepared primarily with organic ingredients. In the morning, there is an American breakfast buffet with an organic food corner. For lunch, there is a light, 3-course, a la carte menu or a packed lunch for cyclers. In the evening, there is a 4-course a la carte menu and once a week there is a large gala buffet. In the late afternoon, we offer tea or coffee and cake. Additionally, there is a “Primadonna Snack Bar” in the late evening.

Itinerary

Day 1Friday, individual arrival at Passau

Fly to Munich airport and make your way to Passau by train. At 4 pm there is a transfer from Passau main train station or at 4 pm from the car parking location to the boat. You can also make your own way to the boat if you miss these transfer times.  Welcome refreshments are offered on board from 4.30 pm; later, a welcome dinner will take place with the introduction of the crew. Enjoy your first dinner on board. The ship will depart around 7.30pm towards Obermuchl pasing the Schlogen bend, this region of the Danube is famous for a U-shaped bend as it navigates around a rock formation (arrival at around 11 pm).

Day 2Saturday, Schlögen Bend – Linz ( 35 miles, 56 km).

Today you shall cycle past the famous landmark the Schlögen Bend to Aschach and then onto Linz which was the European Capital of Culture in 2009, you shall cycle via the uninhabited narrow valley near to Kaiserau, onto Ottensheim and finally onto Linz. We shall depart from Linz around 8 pm.

Day 3Sunday, Tulln to Vienna (19 miles, 31km).

Today we arrive in Tulln around 8.00 am. After breakfast, it is possible to visit the museum of Egon Schiele and its garden exhibition (with some 65 gardens) in Tulln. When you are ready you cycle from Tulln, known as the city of flowers towards Vienna. On route you will have wonderful views of the foothills of the Viennese Woods (Wiener Wald), passing Klosterneuburg and its monastery (Austrian Escorial) and onto Vienna. You can spend time sightseeing in Vienna or take a city tour by bike (95 % of which will be on cycle tracks,  description of the proposed route on the ship. The ship will sail around 11 pm. Optional: After dinner at around 8.30 pm a city tour by bus “Vienna by night”.

Day 4Monday, Esztergom to Szentendre  (36 miles, 59 km) then to Budapest (40mins by train or 13 miles 22km by bike)

Today mostly on cycle paths or minor roads you cycle from Esztergom through what is known as the Danube Bend. Passing the small town of Visegrad on the right bank of the Danube with its castle once the summer residence of King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary. You can visit Szentendre Islands known for its vineyards before either taking the train into Budapest or cycling into the city.

Day 5Tuesday, sightseeing in Budapest / loop cycling tour to Margareteninsel Island (14 miles 22 km).

In the morning there is a city tour around Budapest directly from the boat landing station, the tour is around 3 hours long, transfer back to the ship. In the afternoon you have the possibility of a loop ride on the island of Margareteninsel with its 8km car-free road.

Day 6 Wednesday, sightseeing in Bratislava & a loop cycle tour to Devin (21-30 miles, 33-48 km).

Today we shall arrive to Bratislava around 1 pm. Then we have a guided city tour through the historical centre of Bratislava.  Your afternoon loop cycle tour today takes us along the Danube cycling to Devin with its national memorial of Slovakia.  You shall pass over the new cycle bridge and into Austria and onto the magnificent palace of Schloss Eckartsau. On the return, ride visit the palace of Empress Maria Theresia, Castle Hof with its wonderful Baroque gardens and lavish staterooms.  It once belonged to Prince Eugene of Savoy who purchased it late in his life in 1726 but was later purchased by Empress Maria Theresia. Now you cycle back towards Bratislava.  The ship will depart around 8 pm.

Day 7Thursday, cycling from Krems to Pochlarn (30 miles, 48 km).).

We arrive, at the UNESCO city of Krems around 9 am. Krems is one of the oldest cities in Austria with a history dating back over a thousand years. You can see old fortifications, monasteries and historic squares surrounded by quaint old houses. You leave by bike and shortly arrive in Durnstein. This small town is in the middle of the Wachau wine-growing region. It is overlooked by its medieval castle high on the hillside. You continue cycling to Melk where an impressive monastery awaits to be explored. You now cycle the last few kilometres to Lochlarn where the ship awaits you. The ship departs on its final journey of your tour at around 5 pm.

Day 8Friday, disembarkation / Passau

We shall arrive at Passau around 9 am. After breakfast at around 10am is a bus transfer to the main train station.
