Itinerary

Day 1Arrival Garmisch Partenkirchen

Fly into Munich and make your way to Garmisch by train.

Day 2Garmisch Partenkirchen – Isar valley – lake Tegernsee – Bad Tölz 59 miles 95 km +1031m

Right after Garmisch the first climb, you will have to cycle will start and lasts about 6.8 miles 11 km! Afterwards, you will follow the young Isar river to the barrage of Sylvenstein. Again a short ascent and you will come to the well-known lake Tegernsee which is quite popular in Bavaria. Many rich people from Munich have their weekend house there and therefore you may see famous people there. Afterwards, you cycle passing farmland to the small town of Bad Tölz where you find a wonderful main square with old houses, restaurants and coffee shops.

Day 3Bad Tölz – pre-alp roundtrip tour – Bad Tölz 64 miles 105 km 1100m/Optional: Train to Munich – cycle tour back to Bad Tölz 40 miles 70 km 600m

You will cycle through the slightly hilly landscape just out of Munich with villages and farmland to view. In the background, you will already see the Bavarian Alps. If you start in Munich you will cycle through the Perlacher forest until you reach open land with views of the Alps.

Day 4Bad Tölz – lake Walchensee – lake Kochelsee – Murnau 52 miles 85 km 943m

This time you will cycle the Isar valley upwards until you reach lake Walchensee. Passing a smaller mountain pass it will go down in hairpin bends to lake Kochelsee. Afterwards, you will cycle along the marchland of Murnau which offers nice views and many wildflowers.

Day 5Roundtrip tour into the ‘blue country’ 50-62 miles 80–100km 1100m

Today you cycle more or less from lake to lake but you don’t see all of them. There are not always roads leading to the lakes because in this region it is a nature reserve. Most of the day is rolling countryside. Along the route, you will find lovely villages, old-fashioned beer gardens and views of the Alps.

Day 6 Murnau – Oberammergau – lake Eibsee – Garmisch Partenkirchen 56 miles 90 km 1250m

You start cycling along the lake Staffelsees and will pass a through a small hilly area. Afterwards, you will come to the well known Oberammergau (production of a Passion Play) where you also could visit the castle of Schloss Linderhof. Passing a demanding mountain pass you will come back to Garmisch Partenkirchen but first, you will cycle back to lake Eibsee which is at the edge of Mount Zugspitze. There is a cable car running up to the summit with a small glacier and view to the Alps. Staying on the highest point in Germany might be a good end of the road cycle tour.

Day 7Departure
