On this self-guided cycling holiday provided by Hooked on Cycling, you shall cycle from the old Hanseatic town of Lübeck north to Flensburg, which can be found close to the Danish border. This bike vacation takes you along the Baltic Coastal cycle path and takes you straight through Schleswig-Holstein. On this bike tour, the countryside is very varied, steep cliffs, white sandy beaches and the hilly, fertile green of the hinterland.

You shall cycle through pretty North German towns where you will find friendly people and excellent cooking, which all contribute to the success of your holiday.  This is a wonderful cycle tour in Germany with beautiful scenic views.

Route Characteristics

You will find the terrain sometimes flat, sometimes slightly hilly, mostly on quiet country roads, cycle paths, field and forest trails, occasionally on sandy tracks, paved paths and on cobbles. The route is not always along the coast but takes frequent swings into the varied countryside further inland.

Itinerary

Day 1Individual arrival in Lübeck

Arrive during the day into the historic town of Lubeck with its wonderful historic centre, admire Lübeck’s churches and monasteries, quaint alleys, and townhomes. Visit the literature museum, ‘Buddenbrockhaus’, which was once owned by the Mann family. And, a taste of Lübeck’s famous marzipan is simply a must.

Day 2Lübeck – Neustadt in Holstein 28 miles 45 km.

Today you cycle mostly along the coast admiring beaches and promenades. You shall pass Travemünde, Timmendorf, Scharbeutz and Haffkrug, on the way to Neustadt in Holstein… Care for a swim? Also, there are also many cafés, restaurants, boutiques and shops to lose the sense of time in during the day’s ride.

Day 3Neustadt – Heiligenhafen 38 miles 60 km.

Today cycling further north via Grömitz which is one of the oldest and largest resort towns in the Baltic region. Explore this lovely resort before continuing to Kellenhausen and Dahme before arriving at Heiligenhafen overlooking the Island of Fehmarn.

Day 4Heiligenhafen – Schönberg 38 miles 60 km

Today you will pass more lovely resort towns, vast beaches many manor houses in the backcountry.

Day 5Schönberg – Laboe – Friedrichsort – Eckernförde 35 miles 55 km + boat trip.

Passing Laboe with is submarine and navel cenotaph. Then you cycle across the Wohld peninsular and onto Eckernförde. Here you may want to visit the Borby Church with its beautiful altar, built-in 1686, and rare baptismal from the 13th century.

Day 6 Eckernförde – Kappeln 28 miles 45 km.

Today you shall cycle past a manor house in Ludwigsburg. An interesting place to visit is the resort town of Damp before you shall see some ancient burial mounds. Soon you shall arrive in Kappelin which is well worth spending time in the evening to explore or sometime tomorrow before you start out.

Day 7Kappeln – Glücksburg – Flensburg 38 miles 60 km + boat trip (not running Mondays in April, May and September, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays in October) or 46 miles 75 km.

Today you cycle to Flensburg but before reaching your destination cycle around Gelting bay and visit one of Germany’s beautiful moat castles in Glücksburg. After your visit cycle along the Flensburg Fjord and arrive at your destination and end of the tour. Flensburg is over 700 years old and was once ruled by the Danes around 400 years ago. Stroll through the charming alleys of the Old Town before turning in.

Day 8Departure

Depart after breakfast.
