Our walking holiday in Provence takes in the Cotes du Rhone region not too far from Avignon. This tour is graded as level 2 so fits into our easy to moderate section of grading, ideal for those who maybe do not want too strenuous a walking holiday. Whilst walking in Provence you will walk is far from the crowds, where you can discover the real Provence. Filled with natural and man-made wonders, olives and vineyards as well as the history of the last thousands of years.
On this week-long walking holiday in France, you will go from the beauty and history of Vaison la Romaine with is Roman past. Walking through the area you’ll discover the world-famous Côtes-du-Rhône wine villages of Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Beaumes-de-Venise around the Dentelles de Montmirail and also lesser-known wonders, all nestled under the huge Mont Ventoux.
Vaison la Romaine
From 1st July until 15th September access to the forest paths may be forbidden or partially restricted (access until 11am) if there is a high risk of forest fires. Walks may vary due to the weather conditions and dry season. If a walk is not possible due to those reasons then it is your responsibility to obtain this information. Any extra costs due to those restrictions will be at your own cost (extra transfers etc).

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Walking that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
Arrive during the day to Vaison la Romaine famous for its Gallo-Roman ruins which are the largest archaeological site in France. During the evening if you have time start to explore this amazing town, the narrow streets, the quaint shops and the Provencal atmosphere around street dining.
Transfer to Séguret by taxi with your luggage. Your bags are then transferred on arrival to your hotel. From Séguret (which has been voted one of France’s most beautiful villages), you walk to Gigondas, a village rising up from the vineyards with its 11th-century church. After maybe some lunch continue along the foothills of the range of hills called the Dentelles de Montmirail to Vacqueyres where you shall spend the night.
Today you walk from Vacqueyras to le Barroux, a hilltop village dominated by its 12th-century castle and quiet streets. You are now in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail (which means lace), a range of hills that forms a lacework of limestone peaks.
Today your walk takes you from Le Barroux to Malaucène in the foothills of the Mont Ventoux, the “géant de Provence”, in pine and cedar forests contrasting with its bare peaks at 1,912 metres.
Following quiet trails in the wooden foothills of the great Mont Ventoux to around 400m where you shall experience some amazing views about the village. There follows a steeper descent to the valley where you shall follow a small country lane back to your accommodation
Walk from Malaucène towards Vaison, another great day of discovery as you pass through beautiful areas such as the village of Crestet. Relax and enjoy your last afternoon in Vaison with its Gallo-Roman remains, the largest archaeological site in France.
Depart after breakfast.
By plane to Marseilles, Nimes, Paris or Nice and then a train to Orange where you can take a local bus or taxi the short distance to Vaison la Romaine.
