A Granfondo or cycle Sportive event is a mass participation event which is often on closed roads. Most riders will ride a road bike but it is also possible to ride another style of bike.
Read More Most events have two distances and this varies from event to event but is often 80 miles upwards. Many are over challenging terrain, with hills or mountains expected on route. A Gran Fondo or Sportive is a race for the elite, a challenge of fitness for others as they endeavour to meet a good time but for many, it is a nice day riding with closed roads with great scenery and good company. The most well-known event (or king) is the Etape du Tour, a day of the Tour de France, but the
Italian Nove Colli; the 9 cols, is the Queen of all sportives starting from
Cesenatico.
Then, there is a whole range of great lesser-known rides, such as the Granfondo Colnago near the south-west of Lake Garda, Pantanissima. This again starts in Cesenatico or Degli Squali starting in Cattolica.
