Hike from Black Forest to Lake Constance

Tour Details

From the start, this varied walking holiday in Germany offers an array of unforgettable highlights. You’ll hike past Titisee, one of the largest mid-mountain lakes in Germany, follow high ridges with panoramic views, and traverse the entire Wutach Gorge (Wutachschlucht) — a dramatic nature reserve of waterfalls, gorges and primeval forest.

The long-distance “Querweg” trail guides you through romantic valleys, dense forests and picturesque villages, and over the extinct volcanic cones of the Hegau mountains. This is Hegau hiking at its finest. Your journey concludes in Radolfzell, where the serene shores of Lake Constance invite you to relax and reflect on your Black Forest walking adventure.

From Saig, your Black Forest walking adventure begins on the high ridge above Lake Titisee, with panoramic views stretching to the Feldberg and even the Swiss and Austrian Alps on clear days. You descend into the first highlight, the Wutach Gorge, where a primeval landscape of cascading waterfalls, rocky gorges and lush forest awaits. After this scenic adventure, a short bus ride takes you to your accommodation in Löffingen.

Day 3Schattenmühle / Löffingen – Blumberg 12.4 miles/20 km up: 755 m  down 720 m,  6 h walking time

The day begins with a bus ride back to Schattenmühle. Today’s hiking in Germany follows the Wutach River through dramatic scenery. Smooth forested trails lead to Achdorf, where the river bends toward the Rhine. Continue past the picturesque Schleifenbach waterfalls before arriving in Blumberg, a charming town with cultural highlights including the “Gänseliesel” fountain and traditional carnival masks.

Day 4Blumberg – Tengen 11.8 miles/19 km, Up 490 m | Down 625 m, 5.5 h walking time

Today’s Hegau hiking takes you over Buchberg Hill, offering views of the historic “Sauschwänzlebahn” railway. Further along, the Randen region reveals the impressive Blue Stone, a natural formation of basalt columns up to 10 metres high, remnants of volcanic activity from the Hegau region. The trail continues through rolling hills and forested landscapes to the welcoming village of Tengen.

Day 5 Tengen – Engen 10.6 miles/17 km, up  450 m down 430 m, 4h 55min walking time

From Tengen, you pass over Wannenberg Hill and the Duggenhart, a higher wooded summit once part of the old postal route. The path offers magnificent views of snow-capped Alpine peaks and the hilly Hegau countryside. You wander leisurely over meadows and through forests, arriving in Engen, a historic town with charming streets and architecture to explore at the end of your walking holiday in Germany.

Day 6 Engen – Singen 12.4-14.9miles/20–24 km Up: 390–735 m Down 530–880 m,5h 45–7.5 h walking time

Today’s stage highlights the volcanic Hegau cones and is the ultimate Hegau hiking experience. You traverse the ancient volcanoes Hohentwiel, Hohenstoffeln, Hohenkrahen, Magdeberg, Hohenhewen, Neuhewen, and Howenegg. Along the way, you can still find the ruins of Hohenhewen, with breathtaking views across the Hegau, Lake Constance and the Alps.
