Girona
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Cycling that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
Arrive in Girona and check into your hotel. Once settled, take time to explore this atmospheric city, renowned for its rich cultural heritage. Wander through the well-preserved Jewish Quarter, admire its impressive Cathedral, and stroll along the medieval city walls for panoramic views over the old town and surrounding countryside.
Your first ride follows the El Carrilet Greenway, a peaceful route passing through the towns of Quart, Cassà de la Selva and Llagostera. Along the way, the oak-covered hills of the Gavarres Massif form a constant backdrop — a landscape closely linked to the region’s traditional cork industry.
Leaving the greenway in Llagostera, you begin the climb to the Coll de Sant Grau, rewarded by an exhilarating descent with your first views of the Mediterranean. The final kilometres follow the coastline, including a stretch high above the sea on cliffs rising nearly 100 metres above the water.
You arrive in the seaside town of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where your hotel near the peaceful Sant Pol beach offers the perfect place to relax after an unforgettable first day.
Today’s route heads north along the Costa Brava, combining scenic coastal roads with relaxed seaside riding. Your first stop is Palamós, famous for its fishing heritage and outstanding seafood.
Further on lies the unspoilt Platja de Castell, an ideal spot for a picnic or a relaxing rest. From here, you follow the Ruta del Tren Petit to the charming coastal village of Calella de Palafrugell, one of the Costa Brava’s true gems and a perfect lunch stop overlooking the sea.
Heading inland, you pass through Palafrugell, home to a lively market offering fresh local produce, before reaching the beautifully preserved medieval village of Pals. The route continues through peaceful wetlands and rice fields before finishing in Torroella de Montgrí, dominated by its impressive hilltop castle.
Cycling into the Alt Empordà, the landscape opens up to reveal the wide sweep of the Bay of Roses, with long sandy beaches stretching along the coast.
Near the medieval village of Sant Martí d’Empúries, you’ll visit the remarkable archaeological site of Empúries, where well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins sit dramatically beside the sea — a powerful reminder of the region’s ancient past.
The route continues through the protected wetlands of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà, rich in birdlife and biodiversity, before ending in Castelló d’Empúries. This historic town boasts a magnificent Gothic church, the Count’s Palace, an old market hall and a former Jewish quarter.
One of the most rewarding days of the tour, today’s loop ride takes you deep into the wild landscapes of Cap de Creus Natural Park. The stage includes two significant climbs and an abundance of cultural and natural highlights.
After ascending the Coll de Perafita, you descend into the iconic fishing village of Cadaqués, widely regarded as one of the Mediterranean’s most picturesque settlements. An optional extension leads to Cap de Creus itself, where the Tudela geological park reveals rock formations shaped by wind and sea — a major inspiration for Salvador Dalí.
Retracing your route, you descend to Port de la Selva before tackling the second climb of the day to the Romanesque monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, perched above the coast with breathtaking views. A long, satisfying descent brings you back to your hotel, closing a truly unforgettable day.
Today’s ride leads towards Peralada, at the heart of the Empordà wine region. You may choose to visit local wineries, explore the elegant Peralada Castle, or simply wander its historic streets.
Cycling through villages such as Garriguella, Vilamaniscle and Rabós, you pass some of the region’s oldest vineyards. A stop at the modernist cooperative cellar in Espolla is highly recommended. The day ends in Figueres, home to the extraordinary Dalí Theatre-Museum, one of Spain’s most visited cultural landmarks.
Your final stage combines flat agricultural plains with a rewarding mountain crossing of the Gavarres Massif. Leaving Figueres, you ride through quiet villages including Vilamalla, Siurana and Camallera before the terrain begins to rise near Bordils.
The climb leads to the Sanctuary of Els Àngels, offering sweeping views across the Girona region. From here, a long descent through the tranquil Sant Daniel Valley guides you gently back into Girona — the perfect finale to your cycling holiday in Catalonia.
After breakfast, your trip comes to an end. You may continue your travels independently or return home.
