Take a wonderful short break cycle tour down the River Danube from Linz, the Upper Austria state capital to Vienna.  Along this picturesque route, you will come across historic towns and villages, castles, and monasteries and have the chance to sample wonderful wines from the Wachau region, itself a UNESCO region. The starting point is Linz and lovely little city with many attractions to visit, the train ride up to the top of the Postling Mountains is rewarding just to see the panoramic views from above the city.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to Linz

During the day arrive in the wonderful city of Linz. You shall find Linz to be a compact city with many sites to explore within easy reach. If you have time take the steepest railway in Europe which was built in 1898 up the Postling Mountain.

Day 2Linz to Strudengau 37 miles 60 km.

Today if you wish, take a short detour you can take a visit to the St Florian Monastery, a pilgrimage site where Anton Bruckner is buried beneath the famous Bruckner Organ. Then you cycle towards Enns, which is the oldest town in Austria. Here you shall see Baroque, Roman, and Renaissance heritage within the town’s architecture. The cycle tour then passes through Mauthasusen and if you wish to visit the old German concentration camp from the second world war.  Soon you will reach the gorgeous Baroque village of Grein where there is the oldest theatre in Austria. Here the Danube narrows through the Strudengau area. In Grein visit the Castle if you have time. 

Day 3Strudengau to Nibelungengau 25 miles 40 km

Today’s cycle tour takes you through a fascinating landscape. Full of tall and densely wooded rock formations on both sides of the Danube. Then high above the Danube River, you can find the Pilgrimage Church of Maria Taferl. Later you reach Melk, with its marvelous Benedictine Monastery. You now enter the Wachau region considered the garden of Austria. This region is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Region. 

Day 4Nibelungengau to Krems then train to Vienna 30 miles 48 km.

On today’s cycle tour you will see many terraced vineyards, and many apricot groves mixed with many castles, monasteries, and even palaces. Today you have the possibility to take a break from your bike and travel by boat for some of the way (pay on the spot). As you cycle towards Krems, you will cycle through Spitz, Weißenkirchen, and Dürnstein which are famous for their wine production. The town of Krems is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once in Krems spend a little time exploring before taking the train to Vienna.

Day 5Departure

After breakfast departure back to Linz or your onward journey. Why not book an extra night and explore further this wonderful city.
