Imagine steep rocks and cliffs next to lush green mountains, hidden mountain lakes with their beautiful blue/green colour. These are just some of the things you will witness on your walking holiday in the Salzkammergut region. This region in Austria was made famous by the film “The Sound of Music”, and you can see why with its stunning mountain scenery.
This walking holiday in Austria is available as a self-led walking tour over nine or seven nights. The paths are usually quiet, but lively with nature on all sides. This fabulous landscape, again and again, will make you stand still and enjoy the beauty, in this way natures best is experienced.
Abersee/lake Wolfgangsee
Some trails are quite flat and leading along rivers and lakes to the hotel. Others are climbing/walking up to alpine pastures or from alpine pastures to alpine pastures.
4 to 7 hours walking per day with some climbs of 800 metres, some level of fitness and experience is needed

7-night version without days 5 and 8
Today, you will first take a boat to St. Wolfgang and a hike on the Sattelweg (saddle walk) to Lake Schwarzensee, where the hut serves homemade cakes. Descend to the valley via a gorge and round the Bürglstein to the lake promenade of Strobl. By bus to the Emperor’s summer residence and salt-city Bad Ischl
Walking time: 5 hours, Terrain: short ascents Distance approx. 9.8 miles 15.5 km, Up/Down: 240m / 240 m
Start walking along the promenade of Bad Ischl along the salt-lye pipeline you walk to the salt mountain of Bad Ischl. Passing through alpine pastures we will start the ascent to Mount Predigstuhl where a fantastic view over the World Heritage site at Hallstatt awaits. Passing the Ewige Want (literally meaning eternal wall) we start our descent to Bad Goisern.
Walking time: 5 hours Terrain steeply uphill to the peak Distance approx. 9 miles 14,5 km Up/Down: 785 m / 650 m
From alpine pasture to alpine pasture you walk on a high plateau to lovely Ausseer Land. Then, you have a downhill walk to the alpine pasture of Blaa Alm and along the flower trail to Altausse. Then you go by bus to Bad Aussee.
Walking time: 5.5 hours Distance approx. 11.7 miles 18.8 km Up/down 486/ 589m.
Today you can either relax by the lake or we strongly recommend the 3-lake-tour to the legendary lake Toplitzsee.
Today you walk along a river path through the deeply cut Koppenvalley to the Koppenbrüller caves (public access and guided tours!). Then you will walk to the Lake Hallstättersee, where you take the boat to the centre of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. Take some minutes to stroll through the wonderful small alleys of Hallstatt or visit the World Heritage Museum.
Walking time: 4.5 hours Distance approx 9.3 miles 15 km Up/down 150/220m.
Today first by cable you descend to the Hallstatt mountain valley with the Celtic grave site and the salt mine. Past the mountain Plassen to the Gosau valley. The view on the highest mountain range of Upper Austria, the Dachstein with his glaciers awaits you and later on to the steep ridges of the Gosaukamm. These views are marvellous and a real highlight of the tour.
Walking time: 6 hours Terrain: steeply uphill passages, afterwards slightly up and down Distance approx. 7.8 miles 12.5 km , Up/Down: 686 m / 554 m
A lovely walk to the little lakes of Gosauseen. At the end of the valley, an alpine hut invites you for a “Jause” a lunch-break.
Walking time: 4 hours Terrain short steeply uphill passage, afterwards slightly up and down Distance approx. 7.9 miles 12,7 km Up/Down: 300 m / 300 m
By bus to Bad Ischl. Along the Elisabeth-walk to the idyllic little lake Nussensee and then along the river Ischl to Strobl. On the banks of the lake through the Blinkling-moor to Abersee (lovely view to St. Wolfgang, the high mountain Schafberg and the lake Wolfgangsee).
Walking time: 6 hours Terrain slightly up and down Distance approx. 12.3 miles 19,2 km Up/Down: 277 m / 209 m

By plane to Salzburg and then a bus to the tour start. We can fix a private transfer from Salzburg to the first hotel. Alternatively, you can fly into Munich or Vienna and take the train to the tour start.
