Walking in the Tyrol

Tour Details

The Olympic village of Igls is a wonderful location to take a walking holiday in the Tyrol. Igls is a small alpine village a few miles outside of Innsbruck and has many great hiking trails in Igls. For the duration of your hiking vacation in the Tyrol, you are based at a wonderful 4-star luxury hotel. Igls really is a wonderful village setting, where you can start your walks each day. We have hiking trails around the more relaxing lower altitudes of the green pastures or you can head up by the cable car to 2000m where you can start many alpine walks. Experience hiking in Austria like no other, with stunning views of the Tyrolean Alps.

After your daily walking tours return to your four-star hotel and relax in the swimming pool, wellness centre or wonderful gardens waiting in anticipation for your gourmet dinner (if the half board is booked). We have developed this fixed location walking holiday in the Tyrol to be available for four to seven nights. Whilst this hiking vacation has been graded as a level 2-3, there are endless possibilities for level 2 or even level 3 hikes. This walking tour is self-guided. However, the local tourist office in Igls runs guided walks Monday to Friday (June to September).

Walking in the Tyrol region and whilst hiking in the Alps, you will be provided with stunning postcard-like views around every corner. Don’t always look forward as the best view could be unfolding behind you.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival

Arrive via Innsbruck and transfer to your hotel in Igls a few miles outside the city.

Day 2Zirbenweg 7.5km (Long Walk an extra 8.5km)

Today is one of the most picturesque walks, an option for the shorter walk is to catch the cable car to Patscherkofel to 1964m. On arrival admire the views across the Inn Valley and the Kawendel mountain range opposite. Those who wish to walk up from Igls to Patscherkofel there is a climb of around 1000m. Now your panoramic walk starts along the Zirbenweg which passes some of the finest pine woods of the Eastern Alps. Passing the Boscheban hut (ideal for that morning coffee…or cake) and through the Tulfein pastures. Stop at the Tulfein alm hut for a meal break, whilst overlooking the wonderful mountain views. At the end of your walk, you will catch the chairlift down to Tulfes where you can take the local bus back to Igls.

Day 3Walking tour through Alpine Pastures 14.7km (Long Walk an extra 8.5km)

Today, you take the cable car back up to Patscherkofel at 1964m. Those who wish to walk up from Igls to Patscherkofel there is a climb of around 1000m. You will now follow a lovely circular walk around the mountainside for around 2 hours. You will see the magnificent three valley views of Inn valley, Stubai and Wipp Valleys. Once back to the terminal you now start your descent passing the Patscher Alm before heading across to Heiligwasser. Take a look at the little church before having a nice cake and coffee. The final section will lead you to down into Igls.

Day 4 Innsbruck

No visit is complete to the Tyrol without spending the day in Innsbruck and surroundings. From your hotel a short walk to the train which will take you straight down into the city. Make your way to the old town and walk around the quaint cobbled streets, admire the paintings on the buildings and see the famous golden roof built by Emperor Maximilian. Walk down to the River Inn which flows through the city and wonder at its green waters, maybe rent a cycle and bike a few miles down the River Inn cycleway.

Other options today, if your holiday is in the summer months, is maybe a run down the Olympic bobsleigh or a trip to the grass ski jump. The ski jump was used for the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic Games, and then reconstructed and opened in 2002. Of course, you can still follow one of the many walks in the area

Day 5Village Walk 9.1km

A beautiful walk today through the village locations and lower slopes of the mountains. Follow the path out of Igls towards Vill and up into the quiet forests, which overlook Innsbruck. Descending towards Aldrans before turning back towards and around the Lanser See and back to Igls.

Day 6 Alm Hike 13.2 km (Long Walk an extra 8.5km)

A beautiful walk awaits you through fabulous alpine pastures. An option for the shorter walk is to catch the cable car to Patscherkofel at 1964m. Now from the top cable car terminal, you shall start your walk downwards passing the Aldranser Alm and Rinner Alm and onto Tulfes for your return to Igls.

Day 7Igls to Sistrans/Igls 10.8km

Leaving your hotel you will climb steadily to 1600m via Heilligwasser through the pine forest to Sistranser Alm. After a snack, you can continue the descent to Sistrans. Here you have the option to catch the bus back to Igls or walk the few optional extra miles back to Igls.
