Experience the Cevennes and the Ardeche Gorge on this self guided cycling holiday from Hooked on Cycling. On this bike vacation, you shall cycle up the beautiful valley of the river Rhône starting in Avignon. Soon one reaches Bagnols-sur-Cèze where we leave the Rhône and arrive at the foothills of the Cevennes. The Cevennes feature many stunningly wild landscapes in which the Ardèche-Canyon is certainly the highlight. In 1994 researchers found the oldest cave in the world, at the bottom of this amazing canyon. The prehistoric Chauvet-Cave is over 31,000 years old and approximately 420 paintings and engravings have been found.

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Cycling that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
During the day arrival to your hotel on the Isle of Barthelasse in a very quiet area about 5 km/3 miles from Avignon Centre, it also has a swimming pool.
Today you shall have a welcome meeting at around 9:30am at the hotel reception when bikes shall be handed out. You shall then cycle over the biggest island in the Rhône through flourishing orchards to Roquemaure and continuing through the Rhône valley to Bagnols-sur-Cèze.
Today you shall cycle crossing some amazing landscapes south of the Ardèche-Canyon to Vallon-Pont-d’Arc located at the outset of the Canyon where the river Ardèche runs through a natural rock arch. Visit the arch, it is a stunning sight.
Today you can either take a round trip which will lead you through the foothills of the Cevennes featuring several magnificent villages such as Joyeuse. Or you might decide to discover the Ardèche Canyon with a canoe or relax on a beach overlooking the Arch.
This day will be the highlight of the tour since you will cycle through the entire Ardèche Canyon. This day is the most sporting day with some longer climbs (and descents!). The climb from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc is a few miles long and around 8% but at the top, you will be rewarded with the most stunning views across the gorge with the Arch in the distance.
Today you cycle through the Rhône Valley and onto Orange a UNESCO world heritage site. After you have explored the sites back in the saddles and onto Avignon and back to your start hotel.
