Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Le Rozier

During the course of the day arrive at Le Rozier located at the gates of the Tarn and Jonte Gorges, at the confluence of the two rivers. The village bears its name from the rosebush crops of the monks of the Abbey of Aniane who built the Saint-Sauveur church in 1705. Today of the monastery only the church remains intact.

Facing Le Rozier, on the other side of the Jonte river, is the village of Peyreleau, located in Aveyron, the starting point for the Causse Noir. The village is dominated by an old tower, the last vestige of the older fortified castle.

Day 2Walking Le Rozier to Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers 9.4 miles 15 km, walking time 5 hours.

You start today with one of the most beautiful hikes in the Lozère. The start is rather sporty, with a nice ascent to reach the Causse Méjean. You will be rewarded with a spectacular view! First, the Corniches of the Gorges du Tarn are visible, then far below, kayakers and swimmers. Then the Corniches de la Jonte and their mineral sculptures. Pure marvels of rock, flown over by the giants of the air, the vultures.

Day 3Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers to Meyrueis 11.6 miles 18.5 km, 5.5 hours walking time.

This is the walk with the longest horizontal distance (nearly 20km). It starts in a wooded environment and then takes you onto the Causse and in the middle of pastures. Unmissable, is a visit to the famous Aven Armand, a huge natural cave discovered in 1897. Today’s walk ends with a descent into the valley, in Meyrueis. Between Causses and Cévennes, in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, the peaceful village of Meyrueis is rich in its heritage, its natural environment, the traditions of its region and multiple sporting activities.

Day 4Meyrueis to Nivoliers 11.4 miles 18 km, walking time 5.5 hours walking time.

Today’s walk allows you to fully appreciate the large spaces experienced by the Causse! A very pleasant path, with very beautiful viewpoints on the edge of the plateau. This walk feels like the Mongolian steppes! Shortly you will arrive at the isolated hamlet of Nivoliers where you spend the night!

Day 5Transfer from Nivoliers to Sainte-Enimie + Walking Sainte-Enimie to La Malène 9 miles 14.5 km, walking time 4.5 hours.

In the morning you have a taxi transfer to the village of Sainte-Enimie. Do not miss the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful villages in France, Saint-Enimie. It is in the very heart of the gorge. We do recommend exploring the narrow streets, paved with the Tarn pebbles, and discovering the ancient houses and little restored squares that give the village a medieval atmosphere.

Today’s walk is shorter to La Malène along balcony track high above the river Tarn with a nice view on the cliffs. Go through the village of Saint-Chely-du-Tarn where you can take a break. Continue to the hamlet of Hauterives before joining La Malène, a lovely village on the banks of the Tarn, have a stroll through the narrow streets towards the 12th-century Romanesque church.

Day 6 Canoë Tour from La Malène to Pas de Soucy/Les Vignes 6.8 miles 11 km, 3 hours.

Leave your hiking shoes on, today enjoy a day on canoe (or kayak). This tour from La Malène is undoubtedly the most spectacular and the most beautiful with the crossing of the famous “Détroits”, the narrowest part of the Gorges du Tarn. You paddle beside huge cliffs, then discover the typical village of La Croze on the right bank, before entering the majestic Cirque des Baumes. Further, you arrive at “Pas de Soucy”, another remarkable site, this is where you disembark. You will have about 2 km left to walk to reach Les Vignes for the night.

Day 7Walking Les Vignes to Le Rozier 12.5 miles 20 km, 6 hours walking time.

Today’s walk takes you up onto the Causse, the sunny side of the Tarn valley (the track at the bottom of the valley being on this part is much less interesting). After Saint-Rome-de-Dolan, the route crosses the Causse and its pine forests to reach the balcony of the Tarn. At 500 to 600 m high it separates you from the river, a landscape of a green canyon and colourful looking cliffs.

Now descend through the Cirque de Saint-Marcellin and Eglazines, sheltering surprising ancient troglodyte habitats before arriving in Le Rozier, at the confluence with the Jonte.

Day 8Departure from Le Rozier

After breakfast, time to depart on your journeys home.

How to get there

Fly to Nimes or Montpelier airport. Then by train and bus to Le Rozier however there are only a few buses per day. It is probably best to rent a car and drive to Le Rozier as the walking tour is a circular trip.
