Taking a walking holiday within the spectacular Gorge du Tarn is to enjoy one of Europe’s most dramatic scenery! The Tarn Gorge is for certain a “must do” walking trip in France. This is an authentic natural region that will remain in your memory for years to come. On this walking holiday you shall come across the must see parts, such as the Tarn and Jonte Gorges, the Causses Méjan, Sauveterre and Causse Noir. The Causse is the local name given to a limestone plateau located to the south of the Massif Central. You will come across charming and well-preserved villages such as Sainte-Enimie, known as one of the most beautiful villages within France. Also other pretty villages such as La Malène and Vignes. Beautiful hamlets as Saint-Chély-du-Tarn, Hauterives will be discovered during your walking trip also. You will also cross the entire Causse Méjan and enjoy a canoe tour to discover the gorges in a different way, and why not enjoy some swimming!
Le Rozier
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Walking that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
During the course of the day arrive at Le Rozier located at the gates of the Tarn and Jonte Gorges, at the confluence of the two rivers. The village bears its name from the rosebush crops of the monks of the Abbey of Aniane who built the Saint-Sauveur church in 1705. Today of the monastery only the church remains intact.
Facing Le Rozier, on the other side of the Jonte river, is the village of Peyreleau, located in Aveyron, the starting point for the Causse Noir. The village is dominated by an old tower, the last vestige of the older fortified castle.
You start today with one of the most beautiful hikes in the Lozère. The start is rather sporty, with a nice ascent to reach the Causse Méjean. You will be rewarded with a spectacular view! First, the Corniches of the Gorges du Tarn are visible, then far below, kayakers and swimmers. Then the Corniches de la Jonte and their mineral sculptures. Pure marvels of rock, flown over by the giants of the air, the vultures.
Today’s walk starts in a wooded environment and then takes you onto the Causse and in the middle of pastures. Unmissable, is a visit to the famous Aven Armand, a huge natural cave discovered in 1897. Today’s walk ends with a descent into the valley, in Meyrueis. Between Causses and Cévennes, in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, the peaceful village of Meyrueis is rich in its heritage, its natural environment, the traditions of its region and multiple sporting activities.
Today’s walk allows you to fully appreciate the large spaces experienced by the Causse! A very pleasant path, with very beautiful viewpoints on the edge of the plateau. This walk feels like the Mongolian steppes! Shortly you will arrive at the isolated hamlet of Nivoliers where you spend the night!
In the morning you have a taxi transfer to the village of Sainte-Enimie. Do not miss the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful villages in France, Saint-Enimie. It is in the very heart of the gorge. We do recommend exploring the narrow streets, paved with the Tarn pebbles, and discovering the ancient houses and little restored squares that give the village a medieval atmosphere.
Today’s walk is shorter to La Malène along balcony track high above the river Tarn with a nice view on the cliffs. Go through the village of Saint-Chely-du-Tarn where you can take a break. Continue to the hamlet of Hauterives before joining La Malène, a lovely village on the banks of the Tarn, have a stroll through the narrow streets towards the 12th-century Romanesque church.
Leave your hiking shoes on, today enjoy a day on canoe (or kayak). This tour from La Malène is undoubtedly the most spectacular and the most beautiful with the crossing of the famous “Détroits”, the narrowest part of the Gorges du Tarn. You paddle beside huge cliffs, then discover the typical village of La Croze on the right bank, before entering the majestic Cirque des Baumes. Further, you arrive at “Pas de Soucy”, another remarkable site, this is where you disembark. You will have about 2 km left to walk to reach Les Vignes for the night.
For today you will have a choice of two options. Either choose from a short version, the easiest where you will follow the route of the River Tarn where you will have some beautiful views of the river and the surrounding countryside or choose a more difficult version where you walk higher on the balcony of the Tarn gorge. Higher up you shall see more stunning vistas of the Gorge du Tarn where you are likely to see griffon vultures overhead if you pay attention! The views are getting better and better. Admire the pretty rock formations that can be seen as you stroll through the countryside. As you approach your destination you will eventually descend down to Le Rozier.
After breakfast, time to depart on your journeys home.
Fly to Nimes or Montpelier airport. Then by train and bus to Le Rozier however there are only a few buses per day. It is probably best to rent a car and drive to Le Rozier as the walking tour is a circular trip.
