The bike path is well signposted. You will bike around the southern Black Forest nature park on this cycle tour, where you can enjoy the beauty of the region without even having to think about the little clichés like “Cuckoo Clocks” or “Black Forest Cake”. This tour offers a variety of sights and attractions from mountains and moorlands, relicts of the ice age, quaint old farms, the Rhine and the wine country of Markgräflerland area, spa towns and biker friendly Freiburg. Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to Freiburg

Arrival in the historic town of Freiburg located at the foot of the Black Forest. Here you shall find many wine taverns to explore if you arrive earlier enough.

Day 2Freiburg to Stühlingen, 40 miles 65 km.

The first section of the route is pretty hilly between Kirchzarten to Hinterzarten.  For those who wish to cut this section out, they can take a train for 25km (15 miles – ticket not included). Then from Titisee, you then bike along the Bähnle bike path, an old railway track, through the charming Black Forest. In Bonndorf we recommend a side trip to the wildly romantic Wutach gorge. You pass the tracks of the Sauschwänzle Railway, an old steam engine turned museum, and arrive in Stühlingen. Here you can visit a number if sites, Castle Hohenlupfen, built on a structure from the Roman times and the town’s landmark, the Convent as well as the museum for agricultural machinery are worth a visit.

Day 3Stühlingen to Bad Säckingen, 34 miles 54 km.

Today you cycle passing Ofteringen and the Marienburg Convent, as well as Wutöschingen with its megalithic tomb. On your bike trip, you will discover various local specialities that define this charming region: A trout breeding station, orchards or a little distillery where you can buy the products in a small, integrated shop. From Waldshut-Tiengen you continue along the Rhine through Laufenburg and reach Bad Säckingen, which is known for its trumpeters. A city tour with the night watchman is the final highlight of the day.

Day 4Bad Säckingen to Weil am Rhein, 31 miles 50 km.

The hills of the southern Black Forest keep coming closer to your route along the river. Via Beuggen with its pretty water castle, you reach Kaiseraugst, where you should visit the excavation site of Roman relics. From here it is not far to Basel, where you can dig in the rich history and world-famous museums. Now you have the last few miles until you reach your overnight in Weil am Rhein by crossing the famous Dreilanderbrucke (Bridge).

Day 5Weil am Rhein to Heitersheim/Pfaffenweiler 28-35 miles,  45-56 km

Today you cycle across the world’s longest bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the “Rheinknie” and reach the spa town Bad Bellingen, where you can rest your legs in the thermal springs. Near Neuenburg you leave the Rhine and cycle in “Margräferland” area, where the climate is unusually mild and viticulture has a long tradition. You spend the night in Heitersheim or Pfaffenweiler.

Day 6 Heitersheim/Pfaffenweiler – Freiburg, 9-19 miles, 15-30km

Today you cycle from Ebringen where you will have an amazing view over the Rhine valley. Past truss buildings, vineyards and distilleries you make your way through the Schnecken-Valley to Freiburg. Stroll around downtown along the “Bächle”, visit the Minster or the Old Town Hall or simply enjoy the local cuisine Freiburg has to offer.
