Today you set out on your cycle from Constance and follow the river to the town of Stein am Rhein. Here you shall see lovely medieval houses, many are frescoed. After visiting or taking a coffee continue switching several times between Germany and Switzerland as you reach the canton‘s capital, Schaffhausen. The town, whose citizens competed, with each other in building gables on their houses. Schaffhausen is overlooked by Munot fort which was built in the 16th century.
After breakfast, you have a short cycle ride to reach the Rhine Falls, one of Europe‘s biggest waterfalls. Here it is well worth getting a boat right up close to the mighty roar of the water. To continue your tour you follow the Rhine all your way to Waldshut-Tiengen, passing the Rheinau monastery and the little town of Kaiserstuhl.
Today you cycle further downstream, via the towns of Laufenburg and Bad Säckingen, where you‘ll find Europe‘s longest wooden, roofed bridge. If you stop here there are two very special museums you can visit, The Müllmuseum (garbage museum) and a museum about a famous Trumpeter from Bad Säckingen. Now cycling on the northern bank of the Rhine, you cycle on to Rheinfelden. Here to shorten the route you can board a train for the final miles (not included). Should you decide to continue by bike, a visit to the Roman fort Augusta Raurica is worthwhile in your final section.
You leave Basel behind which is on the border to three countries, here you will see the Istein Klotz from afar, which used to be located right on the Rhine and has always been a site for castles and forts. At the edge of the Black Forest, you cycle through small spa towns, which all draw on the healing waters of the area for its tourists.
Today you will cycle through many vineyards of the Markgräflerland with the Black Forest on your right and to the left the Vosges Mountains. Freiburg is Germany‘s warmest and most southern city.
