From Bavarian Lakes to Mount Zugspitze

Tour Details

Your hike will take us from the Bavarian capital of Munich to the Olympic town of Garmisch. As you head out on foot from the city you shall encounter the wonderful lake region of Bavaria, with gorges and ravines and rushing waterfalls. The beautiful blue-green lakes of Starnberger See which leads the way to Lake Kochelsee which is framed by wonderful mountain scenes.  Along Lake Kochelsee lakeside, a marvellous hiking experience awaits. Lake Kochelsee leads you into the splendid mountain region around the town of Garmisch.  Here you shall see impressive mountain backdrops, high-altitude hiking trails with leisurely cable car rides as well as quaint huts offering many Bavarian delights.

Walking Characteristics

Firstly on undulating terrain through the Alpine foothills. In between a day of rest lures with an option to walk around the lake before you are headed for the mountains towards Garmisch. As a finale enjoy two hiking routes with alpine scenery and splendid mountain panoramic views.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Munich

During the course of the day arrive in Munich. If you have time spend some time to visit the centre of with its numerous sights and experience Bavarian cordiality in one of the many characteristic beer gardens.

Day 2Munich to Schäftlarn  7.5 miles 12km, 3.5-4 hours 200/100m up/down.

Today you leave Munich the Bavarian metropolis on foot as your hike begins along the river Isar passing through forests and lush meadows. You shall initially follow the St. James Way route until the famous Schäftlarn monastery, where you get to enjoy Bavarian delicacies and freshly brewed beer in the beer garden of the monastery. A short steep ascent takes you out of the Isar valley to Schäftlarn where you shall stay overnight.

Day 3Schäftlarn to Bernried 11.3 miles 18km, 4-4.5 hours 150m up/down.

Today you walk through the impressive Maisinger Gorge to Lake Maisinger See, an idyllic moor lake situated amidst spectacular scenery. You then continue towards Possenhofen, where Empress Sissi spent her childhood. Past the  Roseninsel Island and Sissi‘s beloved lido Feldafing the route leads you along the idyllic path along the lakeside of Lake Starnberger See.

Day 4Bernried to Kochel 10.2 miles 16km, 4 hours 50m up/down.

This morning a must visit the Benedictine monastery in Bernried during the morning. Then leave through the Bernrieder Park and picturesque nature reserves directly along the water’s edge. Soon you reach Seeshaupt, the southern end of Lake Starnberger See. This is the start of the incredibly beautiful lake district of the Osterseen lakes, where you enjoy marvellous walks along their lakesides where you can take a swim. Now you can have some fantastic views onto Mount Zugspitze from Lake Ostersee, home of a multitude of waterfowl.

Day 5Day of rest or circular walk Lake Kochelsee 6.9 miles 11km, 3.5 hours 200m up/down.

Today you can have a day of relaxation and enjoyment of a landscape, which was also very much appreciated by many famous artists such as Franz Marc and Kandinsky or maybe follow our hiking suggestion via bridges and footbridges to the Lainbach waterfalls, which impressively pour into a gorge. Your walk along the rock path around Lake Kochelsee as far as Schlehdorf. Finally, you take the boat back to Kochel.

Day 6 Kochel to Wallgau 4. miles 7km, 3.5-4hours 750/0m up/down.

Today the first mountain-tour awaits! The route leads you to the renowned Herzogstad on the local bridle path, which was already used by King Louis in order to reach his hunting lodge. Once you reach the top you take a well-deserved break in the legendary beer garden or climb up to the Herzogstand, where you get a view all the way to Munich and into the high mountain range from the panoramic pavilion. Then you glide effortlessly into the valley by cable car, where you take the bus to Wallgau.

Day 7Wallgau to Garmisch 10 miles 16km, 5 hours 950/100m up/down.

As a finale a fantastic summit tour onto Mount Wank awaits. You walk through the deep Finzbach ravine and ascend to the Finz-alp, a little hut in a fabulous location. Onwards to the Esterberg-alp, where you get to enjoy specialities of the chalet before you embark on the final ascent through the forest to the summit. At the summit, you can see the entire Zugspitze massif and the Wetterstein mountains, situated directly opposite. After a few photos, travel comfortably downhill by cable car into Garmisch.

Day 8Departure

Depart after breakfast.

NOTE: for arrivals, after 16th September we stay 2 nights in Schaftlarn instead of Munich.
