This particular biking vacation in Germany allows you to explore the region around Frankfurt along the River Main cycle path. The cycling path on the Main connects Bayern and Hessen a cycling trip through the “Frankenland”. On this cycle path from Wrzburg to Frankfurt, away from bustle and traffic, you pass a lot of beautiful and typical villages. In large bends, the river Main flows through the varied county Franken. He seeks his way through a marvellous wine-growing area.
A long and ever-changing history has left many castles, fortresses, monasteries, churches and chapels. Many famous and unique cities assemble along the river such as the old Imperial residence Bamberg, old residence Wrzburg, half-timbered Miltenberg or boisterous Ochsenfurt to name only a few of many. An excellent cuisine spoils the palate of the cyclist, rustic beer gardens and wine taverns invite to taste local specialities.

Bamberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The old town of Bamberg is one of the UNESCO World Heritage site. In addition, Bamberg is known for its diverse and independent beer tradition. Bamberg is famous for its gardens and parks such as the charming Rose Garden at the New Residence or the Castle Seehof.
Today you get your bikes (if booked). Time for individual sightseeing of the UNESCO-world heritage town Bamberg (Imperial Cathedral, residence with the national gallery, Abbey of Carmelite, etc.) Afterwards cycling tour on the Main cycling path passing the nature reserve area “Hassberge“ to the sanctuary Maria Limbach. Further on to Hafurt and Schweinfurt. Schweinfurt is located on the north side of the Main. The Main is surrounded by beautifully landscaped natural areas. In Schweinfurt discover the old imperial city and walk in the footsteps of industry pioneers and explorers. Visit also the nice farmer’s market and the lovely restored old town.
Always along the River Main passing vineyards to Volkach and further on to Kitzingen. Dettelbach is a vine growing village. The old town hall is the from the 15th century. The Town’s landmark is the church “St. Augustinus”, whose different towers are combined with a bridge. Through the “Faltertor”, this is one of the 19 best-maintained towers of the Town wall.
Cycling on the left bank through the main valley, which becomes more and more narrow. Pass beautiful vineyards to Winterhausen and further on to Wrzburg. In Wrzburg the Franconian metropolis has everything that makes a town attractive for visitors. Visit the historical “Juliusspital” a charitable foundation. Behind of some gorgeous baroque buildings, you find the vineyards. Visit also the Castle Marienberg. From there, you have a fantastic view of the old town with the many towers.
You continue cycling today passing the abbey in Oberzell before you have the visit two lovely castles at Karlstadt and Gemunden, the latter now a ruin. Soon you shall arrive at today’s destination of Lohr with its medieval suburbs, the wonderful church of St Michael and not forgetting its imposing castle. The Bayers tower is certainly a landmark fit to see.
The former residence town Wertheim is located on the estuary of the Tauber into the main. The town has an amazing atmosphere with its medieval streets and many half-timbered houses. Also, the “Grafschaftsmusuem” and the unique “Glasmuseum”, as well as many sights (“fountain of angels”), are worth a visit. An Impressive view can be seen from the old castle.
First today you have a short train ride to Miltenberg then you cycle through the Main valley, which opens here to Obernburg and further on to Aschaffenburg with its splendid palace. Aschaffenburg is the “door to Spessart”, a German low mountain range. From the Main to the densely wooded Spessart, nature shows an idyllic riverside landscape, fertile vineyards and pristine forests. The romantic old town extends around the town hall to the castle. Here you will find the church with the monastery museum, the Jesuit church with the art gallery, the City Theatre with the Theatre Square and the Johannesburg, one of the most important buildings from the German Renaissance.
A short train ride and take you to Frankfurt and possible departure or extra stay.
