Welcome to our walking the Amalfi coast self-guided walking tours in Italy. This fabulous walking tour is available as a 7-night self-guided hiking tour which we have graded as level 2. The Amalfi coast is full of history and is ideal for walking most months of the year due to its fabulous climate. History has it that the Romans and Greeks were there before the growing of the Baroque Palaces and Churches of Spacca Napoli. The biggest artists were all attracted by the charms of Naples since the early ages right through to the Romantic period.
From the old Néa Polis, founded by Greeks, to the highest glory of the Baroque Age, the city and its environs fascinated every traveller, who loved its artistic treasures as well as its lovely climate and the beauty of nature around. Romans were not wrong when they choose Hercolanum and Baia as their privileged holiday resorts.
The Amalfi coast is a short distance from Naples, is the location of this wonderful hiking vacation. This coastline is one of the most beautiful in Italy. Not only will you explore the stunning towns and villages here but you shall also visit the jet set Island of Capri.
Sorrento
Level 2: These walks are not that long but can be moderate due to the number of steps. They are generally on well-marked paths or mule tracks.
Sorrento: Hotel del Corso
Massa Lubrense: Hotel La Certosa
Amalfi: Hotel Floridiana
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Walking that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
During the course of the day arrive to Sorrento. From Naples airport you can take a bus or private transfer or from central Naples the train. As soon as you get settled in your accommodation, step outside and breathe in the incredibly fresh, crisp air of the Mediterranean Sea. Why not visit the historic centre, and in the evening, immerse yourself in the atmosphere as you have your first Italian dinner.
This morning you take the ferry from the port of Sorrento to Capri Island, the pearl of the Bay of Naples. Once you arrive you have a choice of two walks, a short easy walk to visit Emperor Tiber’s villa or a longer coastal walk from the hill town of Anacapri down to the west coast, with the option of an additional easy panoramic coastal walk to the Blue Grotto. On the island you can use the public bus or cable car to travel around. In the late afternoon return to Sorrento by ferry.
Roman Villa Jovis (Tiberio) walk A:
This is an easy walk that goes from the town of Capri to the Roman Villa Jovis from where Emperor Tiberio is said to have thrown his rivals and unwanted guests off the cliff. Walk along paved and cobbled lanes lined with luxurious gardens, take in great views of the western side of the island and the Gulf of Naples.
From Anacapri to Punta Carena and extension to Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) Walk B:
This is a really spectacular walk with wonderful views of the Faraglioni, Capri, the Gulf of Naples as well as the imposing cliffs between Monte Solaro and Punta Carena.
Once in Punta Carena you can return by bus to Anacapri where you change bus to reach Capri or Marina Grande. You can continue walking to the Blue Grotto.
Extension to Blue Grotto from Punta Carena Walk C:
This is one of the most picturesque trails on the island. The path gently contours the coast offering spectacular sea views from the cliffs and 19th century military forts. From the end of the walk take the local bus to Piazza della Pace, Anacapri.
After breakfast, a private transfer will take you from Sorrento to Sant’Agata, from where you can walk to the wonderful beach at Marina del Cantone via Punta Campanelle. The day’s itinerary offers to offer spectacular views on the Capri Island, the Amalfi Coast, the Gulf of Naples and the Vesuvius. There are 3 optional walks today to choose from.
The day’s walk takes you to the lovely Bay of Jeranto offering great views on the Island of Capri and the Amalfi Coast and ample time to go for a dip in the Mediterranean blue sea if you should, wish too.
After breakfast, a private transfer will lead you to Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi from where you walk to Colli San Pietro, located slightly inland and high above the coastline. Today’s picturesque walk is along old country lanes and footpaths through terraced fields, olive and lemon groves that open out onto the Mediterranean. Here you can clearly smell the many wildflowers and Mediterranean scrub.
In the afternoon take a local bus to Amalfi where you will be staying for 3 nights.
This is the most famous of all the walks on the Amalfi coast along the Sentiero degli Dei, known as the Path of the Gods. You shall see immense coastal panoramas and a high cliff coastline will accompany you from Bomerano, (that you reach with the local bus from Amalfi). Here you see all of the colourful villages of Positano perched on the side of the mountain. From Positano take a local bus back to Amalfi.
WALK A: The more demanding walk of the two options take you via Pontone to Pogerola and back to Amalfi. You will come across the Sanctuary of Madonna dei Fuondi passing lovely ancient traditional villages and stunning landscapes.
WALK B: Pontone-Pogerola-Amalfi above the Valle delle Ferriere. The longer loop will satisfy the demanding walker with its spectacular views of the bay of Salerno and the high cliffs of the Amalfi coast

We had a great time! After the trip, it felt we covered all the highlights of the region in a week and we did not feel the pace was too fast in terms of the activities/sightseeing planned each day.
Some of the things we particularly liked:
– The app, which was really helpful to guide us during the hikes where sometimes the paths were not well maintained with no indications along the way
– The quality of the hotels selected. We enjoyed how authentic the hotel Gentile was at Agerola with delicious local fresh food served at dinner. The staff was also really friendly which made up for the noise at night.
– The organisation. All the information provided were helpful, clear and sent in good time. The transfers planned along the way were easy to reach and on time.
We’re back and pleased to report that the trip was a BIG success. All in all, the paths were harder than we expected but the scenery was also much more beautiful and dramatic than we expected. For relatively inexperienced hikers I think we managed very well!
Had a great holiday. Appreciate all you did for us. Would suggest your company to other walkers.
