This wonderful hiking vacation in Italy takes place on the island of Elba of the west coast of Italy not far from Pisa. An idea short break at 5 nights, this self-guided walking holiday on Elba has been graded level 2, so is accessible to most levels of walker with a little experience. Legend has it that when the Tyrrhenian goddess, Venus emerged from the waves of the sea, seven gemstones fell from her tiara, and so the Islands of the Tuscan Archipelago were born, of which Elba is the largest.
Whilst walking on Elba you will see why its natural beauty and natural resources have long attracted visitors and why holidays on Elba as so popular.
High granite cliffs and sandy beaches alternate each other along the rugged coastline, with each inlet different from the next.
Inland there are many small picturesque villages worth discovering. The many footpaths on the island take you through shady forests to high peaks and ridges with 360° views across the island and down to the typical low Mediterranean vegetation and great beaches.
The island of Elba is 10 km from the mainland and is 224 square kilometres. It has a population of about 30,000 and it is divided into 8 municipalities. You can reach Elba by ferry and the journey takes 1 hour, or by the hydrofoils, which take 20-30 minutes.
In addition to the natural beauty, there is the wonderful sea with 10 km of sandy beaches, 4 km of pebbly beaches and 3 km of cliffs. The highest mountain is Monte Capanne (1018m) and you can reach the top with a small cable car – if you have a head for heights.

Marciana Marina
A selection of walks to choose from short and easy to longer and more demanding on hilly terrain. The walks are along uneven footpaths, mule tracks and strade bianche (small gravel roads) through Mediterranean vegetation or woods
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Walking that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
From Pisa airport, you go to the nearest train station and take the train to Piombino. Then you will board a ferry and marvel at the magical emerald blue Mediterranean Sea as you make your way to Portoferraio. At the port, a transfer will take you to your accommodation in Marciana Marina.
After breakfast take the local bus to Marciana where both walks start.
WALK A Marciana to Poggio 6.2 miles 10km, 425/515m up/down, 4 hours walking time.
This is an easy walk on the northern side of Monte Capanne, the highest of the island from where you have panoramic views of Marciana Marina and other villages. Afternoon local bus back to Marciana Marina.
WALK B: Marciana & Madonna del Monte Sanctuary round walk 9.4 miles 15km, 800m up/down, 5-6 hours walking.
Start climbing on the Monte Capanne ridge to the panoramic point of “LaTavola”, from where you have great open views of the Eastern side of the island and of the islands of Pianosa, Montecristo and Capraia. Then gradually descend to the most important chapel of Elba: the “Madonna del Monte Santuario”. A shady descend leads you across some streams back to Marciana. Afternoon local bus back to Marciana Marina.
A morning transfer takes you to the village of San Piero in Campo where a panoramic round walks with spectacular views of the coast starts. Walking through the Mediterranean grown vegetation you will encounter some “Caprili”, ancient stone huts once used by the shepherds for milking the goats and making cheese. Afternoon local bus to Marina di Campo.
The day’s walk takes you up to Monte Poro and Colle di Palombaia along a panoramic ridge path running along the cliff edge. Most of the walk is in the shady woods and there are good views on Monte Capanne and Monte Calamita.
The day’s walk climbs on the ridge of the Monte Fonza from where you can admire the whole of the Gulfs of Marina di Campo and on the other side of the mountain the bay of Lacona.
Today you will be transferred to Portoferraio where you board the ferry to Piombino.
