On this cycling holiday in Italy, you will enjoy a cycle tour around Italy’s largest lake. Lake Garda. With Lake Garda on your right shoulder, you will visit many lovely historic towns with breathtaking mountain scenes as your backdrop. The landscape is pretty varied, in the south you will have a Mediterranean feel, and here the landscape is flatter. As you hear north you shall see the mighty Dolomites where the north shorelines are an activity mecca. Finally, you can enjoy the stunning views from Monte Baldo before descending back to your start point close to Verona. Verona is the city of love where you can see ancient buildings and Romeo and Juliet’s balcony.
Bussolengo (Close to Verona)
The cycle tour is on easy cycle paths and side roads with little traffic. Longer climbs are avoided with included transfers (see day-to-day schedule).
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Cycling that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
During the day arrive to your hotel in Bussolengo which is a short distance from Verona. It is located nicely between Lake Garda and typical rolling hills edged with famous vineyards.
Bussolengo is a lovely city located directly on the Adige River in the midst of the hilly landscape of the Venetian Pre-Alps. Today, by bike you will follow the course of the River Adige to Verona. Verona is a romantic, elegant and flourishing city of which it is famous for its Romeo & Juliet balcony. Its old town in the year 2000 was added as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will certainly be amazed by its history, culture, architecture, and joie de vivre. You return to your hotel via some rolling landscapes of the southern Lake Garda region.
Today you will join the shores of Lake Garda near Peschiera. There are plenty of places along today’s route to explore, enjoy an Italian coffee of take lunch. Along the route, you will cycle through Desenzano, Padenghe and Moniga. Your destination today is Salò, situated in a bay on the west side of Lake Garda. Salò is a pretty town with many quaint streets and alleys and roadside cafes and bars. Of course, many gelaterias where you can buy Italian ice cream. In the evening why not take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade?
For the first kilometers to Gargnano, you cycle right beside the lake. Once in Gargnano, you catch a ferry (ticket included) directly to Limone. As you may guess Limone is known for its lemon groves. It is also known locally for its delicate flavored olive oil grown there which gives longevity to its inhabitants. You will then continue along the most spectacular cycle path in Europe which, for a newly built section, floats partially free above the lake, 50m above the water.
Today you pass the two northernmost towns on Lake Garda, Riva del Garda, and Torbole. The northern Lake Garda region is particularly popular with water sports enthusiasts, climbers, and also cyclists. On the eastern side of the lake, you finally reach Malcesine at the foot of Monte Baldo. The shortcut option today is by boat across the lake (Ticket for 1 boat trip on this day included). To extend the stage you can take a detour to the tranquil town of Arco.
Today‘s cycle route is a clear contrast to the rest of the tour. First, by cable car/transfer (ticket included) you arrive at the starting point of your ride, at almost 1,700 m on the ridge of Monte Baldo. Here there are stunning views across Lake Garda. Now on a wonderful mountain road with breathtaking views, you cycle back downhill to more Mediterranean regions. The stage destination is the town of Garda situated again on Lake Garda shores.
You will admire heather-clad slopes and extensive views across to the distant North Pennines via the infant River Caldew, enjoying an ascent of High Pike – the highest point of your journey at 685 meters.
Today from the town of Garda you cycle beside the lake to Bardolino and on further onto Lazise. Be sure to stop for a break to eat in one of the many restaurants on the waterfront or wander through the alleys of the towns of Bardolino and Lazise. Finally, head through the rolling vineyards back to Bussolengo.
