Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Pisa

Arrive in Pisa and take some time to explore Pisa’s historic charm, including the iconic Leaning Tower and the beautiful old town with its lively piazzas and quaint streets. It’s the perfect start to your Italian adventure.

Day 2Pisa to Viareggio (Approx. 30 km)

Today you will begin your days cycle with another look at Pisa’s magical old town before cycling through the scenic Macchia Lucchese national park. This route leads you to the Tyrrhenian Sea. End your day in Viareggio, a seaside resort known for its historic swimming baths and relaxed atmosphere. Don’t miss the chance for a refreshing dip in the sea, either here or along the way.

Day 3Viareggio to Lucca (Approx. 45 km)

Start the morning cycling along the Versilia coast before you turn inland to follow the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route. This well known historic path winds through medieval villages and scenic Tuscan hills. As you near Lucca, the ride takes you alongside the Serchio River. Once in Lucca, explore its enchanting old town and enjoy a unique highlight: a bike ride along the city’s historic walls, offering stunning views and a taste of its fascinating history.

Day 4Lucca to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (Approx. 50 km)

Cycle along the Serchio River as you head deeper into Tuscany. The route leads you toward the Apennines National Park, framed by towering peaks. Stop at the breathtaking Devil’s Bridge, which is a dramatic medieval structure steeped in legend, for a memorable photo. Your destination, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, is a time capsule of narrow cobblestone streets, stone bridges, and quaint squares that capture the essence of old-world Italy.

Day 5Castelnuovo di Garfagnana to Forte dei Marmi (Approx. 50 km)

Today’s route begins with a challenging yet rewarding climb, gaining 550 meters of altitude over the first 20 km. You’ll be greeted by the iconic quarries of Carrara, which are famous for producing the pure white marble used by Michelangelo. After that, it’s an exhilarating 30 km downhill ride to the coast. Arrive in the resort town of Forte dei Marmi, where you could end the day with a swim in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Day 6 Forte dei Marmi to La Spezia (Approx. 55 km)

Cycle through vineyards as you leave Tuscany and enter Liguria. Stop in the picturesque fishing village of Bocca di Magra before continuing along a scenic coastal road with views of the Mediterranean. Pass through Lerici, known for its pastel-coloured houses and picturesque harbour, before arriving in La Spezia; a vibrant port city full of art, culture, and delicious Ligurian cuisine.

You will admire heather-clad slopes and extensive views across to the distant North Pennines via the infant River Caldew, enjoying an ascent of High Pike – the highest point of your journey at 685 metres.

Discover the iconic Cinque Terre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its five colourful villages perched on the cliffs above the sea. Start with a train ride from La Spezia to Monterosso and enjoy a breathtaking coastal hike, offering incredible views of the villages and sparkling waters. Visit Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore, taking time to explore each. If needed, you can shorten the route by train or boat. Return to La Spezia via the Cinque Terre Express train, filled with memories of this stunning region.

Day 8Departure

After breakfast, it’s time to bid farewell to Italy or extend your stay to explore more of this beautiful country.
