Sicily Volcanoes

Tour Details

This tour in Sicily is themed around the active and extinct volcanoes in Sicily Italy. We offer this walking holiday in Italy over 7 nights on a self-guided basis and it is graded as level 2. This walking holiday allows you to appreciate the power of volcanoes, contrasting in the scenery from the lush green to the barren landscapes. Also on offer on this hiking vacation in Sicily is the sweet taste of the “Malvasia” wine, flowers and the warmth of the local people. The Aeolian Islands north of Sicily represent a little paradise where life proceeds at a slower and relaxed pace. Moreover, the Etna Volcano, that has enchanted ancient and modern writers, emblem of supernatural for Greek, Latin and Norman people, dominates the area of eastern Sicily.

On this walking holiday in Sicily, you will visit the east of the island, Mount Etna and the Aeolian Islands of Lipari and Stromboli. On Stromboli, you can experience the emotion stirred up by an active volcano. The northern island of the Aeolian Archipelago is a volcano that, due to its perpetual activity, was called “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean Sea”. Stromboli Island is a land of vibrant contrasts and strong emotions, the moonlight during the nocturnal ascent to the crater, the blue of the sea and the spectacular intermittent explosions of the volcano that light up the night in red.

Climbing the Fossa delle Felci Mount in Salina, the highest of the seven Islands in the Aeolian archipelago, you’ll meet luxuriant vegetation. Lipari, thanks to the obsidian erupted from its volcanoes, is one of the few Italian minor Islands where the presence of humans has always been constant since ancient age.

One of the most interesting aspects of these Islands is the human presence, also in ancient times. The excavations carried out during forty years by Luigi Bernabò Brea and Madeline Cavalier represents extraordinary evidence of the civilizations that from the 4.000 b.C. to the V-VI century AD inhabited the Aeolian Islands.

From Lipari you take the local bus to Quattropani where you start this highly varied walk along the coast, with views on Salina, Filicudi en Alicudi, passing quiet old villages and fumaroles.

– Lipari Island Walk from Acqualcalda to Canneto 3.2 miles 5km 2 hours 350m up/down.

From Lipari, we take the public bus to Acquacalda. This is where your walk starts which takes you from the beach to beach through evergreen vegetation. On the walk you shall come across many magnificent views of the surrounding Islands, remember to take your costume as the finish of the walk is at one of the best beaches on the Island.

 – Vulcano Island: Round walk to the Gran Cratere 3.5 miles 5.7km 2.5 hours 290m, if closed walk 7.5 miles 12km, 310m up , 670m down, 4 hours.

Vulcano is a spectacular small island where you walk up to the “Gran Cratere” that is yellowish from the sulfurous smoke that it emits. From the top, you have exceptional views of the whole island and the volcanic archipelago. After the walk, head for the thermal sulfurous mud bath where you can also go swimming at the nice beach. Return to Lipari with the afternoon boat.

Salina Island has a very special ambience. Here the wonderful film “The Postman” was shot. First, you take the bus to Semaforo of Pollara where you walk along the western coast of Salina. You will have a demanding climb with some steep sections but you shall be rewarded with wonderful views of the Islands of Filicudi and Alicudi. Today you travel from Stromboli back to the mainland of Sicily by boat and then by train or bus to Taormina. You should then have the afternoon to explore this wonderful town. Visit the cathedral, the Greek Theatre which was built around the 3rd century BC. This Theatre is very interesting, see the red-stoned wall around the outside and the red-stoned pillars. These were added later by the Romans, the Greeks used the Theatre to educate the people and wanted an open back behind the stage, this way the had sun, sea, fire ( Mount Etna)  and wind in view, all the senses whereas the Romans wanted to uncase the stage inside a building not just for plays not gladiator type events!

Day 7Guided hike up mount Etna 6.2 miles 10km 4.5-5 hours 450m up/down

Today after breakfast you shall be transferred to Piano Provenzano where an easy guided walk takes you up Mount Etna.  Walking through lush vegetation and old and new lava flows. Included in the guided hike is lunch in a local vineyard serving local produce.  The afternoon continues with a visit to the unique Alcantara Gorge, famous for its strange rock formations.  You shall return to Taormina in the early evening for a last evening walk and dinner in the town.
