Catalonia is a beautiful region to explore on foot and perfect for a walking holiday in Spain. This self-guided walking tour will take you on signposted trails North of Barcelona from Montseny to Montserrat. Enjoy the wonderful rolling landscapes on the Montserrat hiking trails which you will get to experience on this walking tour. Holidays in Catalonia are great for discovering many ancient homesteads which are often constructed with natural dry stones; some of which have been converted to hotels.
The hiking tour in Catalonia finishes in Montserrat which was a key town in Catalan spiritual life. The Montserrat Monastery has been home to hundreds of monks living an ascetic existence, but it was also an extremely important enclave for pilgrims from all over Europe, who came to pray to the Virgin and atone for their sins. Why not book a walking holiday and embrace the heart of Catalonia.

Arrival to Barcelona airport and transfer to Montseny about 35 miles from Barcelona.
Today’s walking route starts in Montseny and enters into the Montseny Natural Park, which was declared Biosphere Reserve. You will be walking through holm oak woods and along a very clear path, then you have an ascent of 1195 metres, from where you will see some spectacular sights of the Park and the Pyrenees in the distance.
Today is an easier walk, but you have also had an ascent towards the Cingles de Bertí rocky cliffs which is spectacular. From here, the panoramic views to the east, both over the Congost River Valley and the El Montseny Massif, are truly unforgettable. The path will continue through rolling hills, passing by historical areas, medieval sites, natural landscapes and a few waterfalls.
During this day, the path goes amongst pinewoods and agriculture crops for most of the day. You will continue on conveniently signposted dirt tracks and footpaths towards Sant Llorenç Savall, always walking on the very rustic wooded terrain. In Sant Llorenç, Teresa and her family are waiting for us to offer a fantastic meal.
This route today provides an opportunity to experience some of the most emblematic landscapes of the Catalonian Serralada Litoral Mountain Range. These Mediterranean peripheral mountains have two of their most unforgettable enclaves in the La Mola and El Montcau peaks. At the end of the day, you will finally discover Mura, a medieval village that sits within the silence of these mountains. Climbing up to La Mola is optional, this is approx. 8km more (there and back)
Between Mura and the town of Rellinars, the route will enter predominantly deserted areas. The essence of the landscape will be the Mediterranean pine woods, a broken landscape irrigated by one watercourse after another. We will discover the spectacular hidden side of the Natural Park of Sant Llorenç del Munt.
Between Rellinars and Montserrat, the mountain will approach us. The Montserrat Mountain has pointy type peaks and as you ascend, you will enjoy the consecutive shapes of El Cavall Bernat, El Serrat de les Barretines, El Serrat del Vent, El Montgròs. We are sure you will not see any other Mediterranean summit more spectacular. Montserrat certainly is the sacred mountain per se.
Depart after breakfast.

We all had a great time. The tour is really great value and the route is very interesting. The hospitality at all stops was excellent. Thanks to you folks and Anna your local lady for organising this for us.
Thank you for organising our walking holiday in Catalunya. The GPS worked perfectly, and we enjoyed getting to know some of this beautiful region. All the overnight stops were excellent. We especially liked the Hostalet de la Merceria, where Lluïsa made two wet and muddy walkers very welcome with a pot of tea and cakes, and Theresa’s wonderful cooking and friendly family at Hostel Cal Pla, and but all our accommodation was very good.
