There is a region of Spain that is untouched by mass tourists and that is the region of Sierra de Francia. This walking vacation in Spain is in a truly stunning area near the Portuguese border. A perfect walking holiday starting in the city of Salamanca; a World Heritage Site. Here you can discover the beautiful main square which is said to be the most beautiful in Spain. You will then head off on your walking holidays to explore the stunning natural park of the mountainous region of Sierra de Francia. Along the way, you will see that the traditional way of life is still very much alive here.

Enjoy walking amongst terraces of olive groves, vineyards, cherry and plum orchards and small vegetable plots carved on the hills, in an area otherwise dominated by vast oak and chestnut forests. Explore the narrow streets in the mountain villages and enjoy the peace and quiet as you explore the Sierra de Francia on foot.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to Salamanca

The first night in Salamanca city will allow you to discover this ancient university city and its beautiful baroque main square, cathedral and many other interesting museums and historic buildings. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to explore the city in full as you will have some time tomorrow to explore more.

Day 2Explore Salamanca

You have the morning to explore Salamanca before your taxi transfer to Sierra de Francia in the afternoon.

Day 3Alberca to Las Batuecas and transfer back. 7.5 miles 12 km, 4 hours 180m up

Walk down into the spectacular Batuecas Valley and its isolated Monastery to then visit prehistoric paintings along with a pleasant river walk. A taxi transfer will take you back.

Day 4La Alberca to Mogarraz. 11.8 miles 19 km 493m up, 6-7 hours

Wonderful walk along oak and chestnut woodland crossing several mountain villages and finishing in Mogarraz.

Day 5Mogarraz to Miranda del Castañar. 6.2 miles 10 km, 3-4 hours, up 190m

Another beautiful walk following the river Francia through woodland and terraced cultivation to reach the medieval town of Miranda del Castañar.

Day 6 Miranda del Castañar to San Martín del Castañar. 7.5 miles 12 km587m up, 4-5 hours

A walk taking you through the south-facing slopes, cultivated with vineyards and olive groves and surrounded by strawberry tree and oak woodland. You will walk past two traditional mountain villages to reach the wonderful village of San Martin del Castañar.

Day 7Taxi to Peña the Francia Peak to descend to San Martín del Castañar. 10.6 miles 17 km, 282m up, 6 hours.

A taxi transfer will take you to the top of the highest mountain in the area “Peña de Francia” where there is a monastery. From here your walk takes you through open mountain landscapes, pine forest and later the beautiful woodland of oak and Chestnut.

Depart after breakfast.

How to get there

By plane to Madrid international airport where you take a bus from the airport to Salamanca (approx. 2hrs and 45mins). On return take a bus service from San Martin to Salamanca (takes 1 hr) and from there take a bus back to Madrid airport.
