Welcome to Hooked on Cycling and our road bike self-guided cycling holidays around Lake Constance. Lake Constance is situated between Germany, Austria and Switzerland. There is a wonderful cycle path going around the lake but for the road cycle tour, we have selected cycle routes that go into the backcountry as well. Many times the trail will be flat but there are demanding ascent to pass if you choose to cycle into the Swiss mountains and surrounding hills. Lovely small towns and villages are situated near to the lake and many attractions are along the route like the famous Rhine waterfalls in Schaffhausen. Depending on the season you will pass vineyards and fruit orchards in full bloom or see the Alps capped with snow. A highlight is also the islands in the lake like Mainau with its castle and flower gardens.
NOTE: We reserve your bike at the bike rental shop but you shall need to pay for this locally, you can also then rent locally extras like pedals, helmets etc. Shop closed Sundays early season. Need to arrive by 3 pm on Saturdays, shop open at 9 am on Mondays.
You will cycle through the countryside with small hills, river valleys and many historic cities. There is a choice of routes most days, and depending on the route you chose you will follow smaller side roads, cycle paths, and some sections on main roads. The main roads can sometimes be busy on weekends or peak season.
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Cycling that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
Fly into Munich, Zurich or Friedrichshafen airport and then by train to Bregenz on the east end of Lake Constance. Bregenz has a wonderful summer festival in mid-July for around 1 month.
Today you first cycle following the lakeside cycle path leaving Bregenz, after which you will cycle along the Bregenz river and the old Rhine river valley. You don’t even see it that you cross the border to Switzerland. In the background, you will see the mountains coming (or do you choose the cycle trail along the lake?) and the winding mountain road leading you over the well know pass of Ruppen to the famous Appenzell. Along a high road, you will cycle to Heiden where it descends to lake Bodensee again. What a view! Afterwards, you follow the road or cycle path along the lake to Güttingen.

Afterwards, you follow the road along the Rhine river passing many little villages on your way to Schaffhausen where you find the famous Rhine waterfalls. Optional we have a tour running a little rolling in the backcountry where you find many hamlets and farming land. In the town of Stein am Rhein both trails are meeting again.
