Let us take you to one of the best-kept secrets of walking holidays in Sicily, the stunningly beautiful Madonie Mountains. Our walking holiday in Sicily starts not too far from Palermo and is offered as a 6-night self-guided hiking vacation.

The Madonie mountains Sicily lie almost in the shadow of one of the most famous and dominant peaks in this part of Europe, Mount Etna. This region, the Parco delle Madonie, is an incredibly beautiful yet unknown mountain area south-east of Palermo. Rugged cliffs and razor-sharp mountain crests almost reaching up to 2000m offer many a panoramic view to greet you.

Whilst walking in the Madonie Mountains you will notice small villages built like eagles nests that lie scattered against the mountain slopes. Daily life passes away slowly, following the rhythm of the seasons and is strongly influenced by old rituals and traditions. People here still live off what nature has to offer. They work the small fields and grow their own vegetables, maintain the olive groves and vineyards and harvest the figs, almonds and hazelnuts.

Through this timeless landscape, you will enjoy your hiking vacation in Italy a real walk that takes you from the highest mountains to the sea at Cefalú, the famous harbour town with a Norman Cathedral dating back thousands of years.

Difficulty

The daily distances fluctuate between 8-10 miles, 13 and 16 km. You’ll climb and descend between the 200 and 750 m. Although the majority of the walks are not difficult and fairly well signed. You should, however, have some experience in mountain walking and orientation.

Best travel season

The best season for planning this tour is in late spring and early autumn. Not only the weather but also nature is at its best during these months. It rarely happens that you find snow on the highest pass at the beginning of May.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Sicily and transfer to Petralia Sottana

Arrive in Sicily and breathe in the warm island breezes and aroma of the outstanding local flora. Take a bus from Palermo Airport to the first accommodation in Petralia Sottana or book a private transfer to your first accommodation. Enjoy your first dinner in a local restaurant of your choice trying the many flavours of the tasty regional cuisine.

Day 2Loop walk 9.4 miles 15km 470/470m up/down 5 hours.

Today to enjoy a loop walk around the Petralia’s hills. During your walk you can enjoy beautiful landscapes across the southern part of Sicily, you can also see Mount Etna in the distance. There are a few sections across clay soil that can get heavy going in wet conditions, thankfully, it does not rain so much! All elevations are pretty gently except for one small section.

Day 3Transfer to Gangi and walk to Geraci Siculo 7.5 miles 12 km 484/278 up/down 4 hours.

After your breakfast, you have a transfer to Gangi where your walk starts. Gangi is a very beautiful village perched on the hilltop! Today’s walk starts off fairly steep with rough underfoot sections but it eases out as you reach the higher lands where views begin to unfold and you follow panoramic dirt roads and well-marked trails, making a loop around the fascinating Vallone degli Angeli. Soon you will reach your destination of Geraci Siculo. This is a medieval village and has been classified as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It also has some ruins of a Norman Castle.

Day 4Geraci Siculo to Rocca di Gonato. 9.4 miles 15km 433/677 up/down 5 hours.

Today you are walking through the range of the Madonie Mountains. You shall be met by breathtaking landscapes. In the distance you might be bale to get a glimpse of the Aeolian Islands off the North coast of Sicily.

Day 5Castelbuono. 8.1 miles 13km 206/635 up/down 5 hours

Today you’ll say goodbye to the Monte Madonie and descend to Castelbuono. This is an easy walk of around 5 hours so you should have time in the late afternoon to have a stroll through Castelbuono. The ancient castle of the Ventimiglia family, the medieval town centre and the small streets are all worthwhile visiting.

Day 6Cefalù– Short-Loop Walk Available 1.5 miles 3km 207m/203m up/down 1.5 hours

After breakfast, you’ll be transferred with your luggage to the bus stop of Castelbuono from where you’ll travel by public transport to Cefalú. After checking in at your hotel you’ll have the rest of the day to yourself. The Normans Cathedral, climbing the Rocca or the cool waves of the sea, the choice is yours.

Day 7Departure

You can travel back to Palermo by bus or with a private transfer.

How to get there

The best airport to use is Palermo Punta Raisi where you can catch a bus to the first accommodation or you can book a private transfer. The bus company which arranges the public service at the start is Sais Autolinee (www.saisautolinee.it), Return Cefalu to airport by bus.
