St Francis way Camino is one of the most popular camino’s in Europe if not the world to walk. This particular trip from Assisi to Spoleto takes place over 6 nights on a self-guided basis and is graded as level 2. This section of the St Francis way is in Umbria, often well known as the green heart of Italy, mainly due to the fact that it is one of the richest regions in Italy.
You shall sample beautiful landscapes, fabulous local food and towns and villages rich in history and culture. The Saint Francis trail is a historic path following the route he made 800 years ago. It takes you across fields, vineyards and olive groves and through ancient forests as you head from historic village to village. This is true Italy where time seems to have stood still.
Assisi
This is a level 2 tour with walks up to 5 hours. This trip presents different landscapes. You will cross several hamlets and some larger villages where access roads have been asphalted. We have tried to avoid as much asphalt as possible. Some walks are on white roads (strada Bianca). The walks are for the greater part on well-marked trails, old donkey paths and roads, and a walking stick can thereby be handy.

Spello: Albergo Il Cacciatore
Foligno: Albergo Ristorante Le Mura

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Walking that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
If you arrive earlier enough you should spend the time to explore Assisi with its many outstanding churches, palaces, and ancient buildings. The Basilica of St. Francis with the crypt, the Church of Santa Chiara, the Cathedral of San Rufino and the Minerva Temple built in Roman times are all here to be found.
Today you walk from Assisi to Spello. You will follow a beautiful uphill trail which leads through the slopes of Monte Subasio to the astonishing hermitage called “Eremo delle Carceri”. If you wish you can take a taxi to avoid a good part of the climb to the Eremo delle Carceri. This magnificent monastery was one of the places where Francis regularly retreated for prayer. The trail continues through an old oak forest to the IX century abbey of San Benedetto. Then a long descent will take you down to the medieval town of Spello.
As today’s walk is shorter you will have time to visit the beautiful, pink stoned medieval town of Spello. Then you shall have a leisurely walk via many olive groves and vineyards which takes you to the village of Foligno. Here you can admire the many picturesque landscapes. If you wis to walk further you can do a loop around Spello before walking to your destination.
First, you will have a short transfer to Uppello, where your walk begins. After a steep climb, you pass the XI century Rocca di Scandolaro castle. You will then continue through oak forests and olive groves until Trevi, another remarkable town well worth visiting. You then walk along a medieval aqueduct where you finally reach Bovara di Trevi, where you spend the night in an agriturismo with a swimming pool.
Now from Bovara di Trevi to Campello Alto you follow the official “Via Francescana”, the original path walked by St. Francis. You shall see beautiful views of the valley of Spoleto. On your way, you can see the majestic high walls of the convent of Pissignano and the convent Padri Barnabiti in Campello, where the meditative atmosphere will uplift your spirit. After passing Lenano, you will reach the tiny, medieval village of Poreta, dominated by its castle which is reached with a short walk from the village.
First, you will join a narrow trail leads you to the hamlet of Santa Maria di Reggiano. The old monastery contains beautiful XII and XIV century frescos. Then you Pass by the hamlet of Eggi and following the old dismantled railway line until you reach Spoleto, or you can make a detour for a longer but spectacular entry into the city, passing high above the Tessino stream on the medieval aqueduct that bridges the valley. From here enjoy superb views of the city and its surroundings.
Depart after breakfast.
We have some very interesting hiking vacations based around Europe, some of these are maybe in lessor explored countries or regions, such as the Painted Monasteries of Romania or even the Green Heart of Istria walking holiday in Croatia.

The Hotel Le Mura in citta di castello and the Agriturismo La Cerqua were outstanding. La Cerqua was particularly good because Gino took superb care of us and the beds and decor were wonderful – a very restful place. At the hotel in Gubbio, the staff were not so helpful.
Really enjoyed the quality and range of the accommodation. Some of the Agritourisms didn’t do evening meals although we were happy with the restaurants available elsewhere. (June 2019)
Thanks for a great walking trip! We had a wonderful time in Italy, and overall we found everything provided by Hooked on Walking to be first-rate and most helpful. We look forward to another trip like this as soon as possible.
It would be good to have the flexibility to stop an extra night as some of the overnight stays to better enjoy the towns where the accommodation was situated. However overall the trip was a wonderful experience which we thoroughly enjoyed. We would have no hesitation in using Hooked on Walking again.
Excellent selection- scenery, landscape diversity and options for shorter/longer walks all worked well. I particularly enjoyed the 4 routes in the Tuscan Appenines. The best accommodation was La Letizia in Chuisi della Verna- lovely family run place, and food fresh and delicious.
We were blessed in the main with mild weather for this time of year in Italy. I would not have wanted it to be any hotter, particularly as many of the transfer arrangements meant that you were limited in being able to start the walks earlier than 9 am.
Overall, it was a great week, very good value and I would highly recommend your company to others.
