This hiking vacation in Spain is in the Ordesa region of the Spanish Pyrenees. The Ordesa & Monte Perdido National Park is one of the most impressive protected mountain areas of Europe, with its high glacier valleys, deep canyons and large forests showing amazing colours in autumn. Walking in the Pyrenees is a great opportunity to enjoy the views and relax.
This region is pretty difficult to reach by public transport. However, we felt the region is so beautiful that it was a shame not to include it. For that reason, we suggest you rent a car from a local airport. We have designed all the walks based around this idea. Each day we have options allowing the walks to be as challenging as you wish, therefore it is graded as a level 2-3 tour.
During this Ordesa holiday, you will first discover the area around the village of Torla. During several high and low walks, right through the valley of Ordesa or high up to the French border near Bujaruelo. Then you’ll drive to the southern part of the Ordesa national park and spend two days at Nerín. Here you will enjoy walking up to and through the high summer pastures above the Añisclo Gorge. All the walks are well marked and easy to follow and offer a real alpine hiking experience for people of all ages.
Torla
Level 2 to 3: You can choose from among 10 day-walks of 2 to 7 hours in length, and thus you can make this trip as easy or difficult as you wish. The highest walks are not suitable for people who are afraid of heights and basic knowledge of orientation (map and compass) is required for these particular hikes.
6 nights in comfortable hotels (rooms with en-suite bathrooms).
Torla – Hotel Villa de Torla
Typical mountain hotel in Torla village centre, family-run with a friendly atmosphere. All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms and some also have a (sun)terrace. The hotel has a restaurant, bar, lounge, and small garden with swimming pool.
Nerín – Hotel Palazio
Nerín is just a cluster of houses in a nearly abandoned valley on the south side of the National Park. Hotel Palazio is a new hotel built in traditional style, with comfortable rooms, restaurant, bar, lounge and a lovely terrace with stunning views.
It is a requirement of booking this tour with Hooked on Walking that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the chosen activity and for emergency evacuation and hospital care.
Arrival at a comfortable hotel in Torla, a lovely mountain village. This hotel has a private swimming pool, restaurant, bar and lounge.
Short drive to the medieval bridge at Bujaruelo. Here you can choose between a short walk of 3.5-4 hours along a landrover track into the Otal valley or a real alpine hike of 5.5-6 hours to a lake at the French border.
Today’s hike is an absolute classic from the local walking repertoire, you will have a 700m climb on a zig-zag trail up to the Mirador Calcilarruego at 1950m. Afterwards, you then follow the Senda de los Cazadores right to the end of the valley. You shall have almost continuous panoramic views over the Great Ordesa Canyon, as it rises in steps to the north all against a wonderful backdrop of high peaks silhouetted in the distance.
Today the standard route is a truly lovely route to the east of Torla. This walk is not as well known which means you will for certain find fewer walkers on it and will feel more with nature. You shall ascend to enjoy panoramic views over Bujaruelo and Ordesa Valleys. Of course, if you prefer to take it easy today, or if the weather is not the best, you may choose to do the shorter Ordesa valley hiking route where you walk through the three historical villages of Fragen, Oto and Broto.
It is now the end of your stay in Torla. After a 40min drive to Nerín, you still have plenty of time to walk into the narrow Añisclo gorge. You can do this directly from the hotel, descending along an old footpath through the aromatic maquis, but do remember that you have to walk up again at the end of the day! (min 4hrs). You can also drive down to the beginning of the gorge and walk as far into it as you please.
From Nerin you walk up to the Biñuales plateau where you can look far down into the Añisclo gorge or extend the hike with the ascent of Pico Mondoto, a fantastic balcony over the entire National Park. (4 to 6,5 hours)
Depart after breakfast.
