But there are some simple and fun ways to take your ride to the next level, whether you’re a seasoned rider or a novice and keeping cycling fun for the whole family.

Get Your Kids Involved in The Planning

Getting the kids involved in planning a great bike ride is a good idea, but it’s even better when you involve them in the planning process from day one of your cycling activity. All family members gather together and come up with a route that involves some fun places to stop, food, and activities along the way. Encouraging kids to be more active and take their bike riding seriously will make cycling more enjoyable for everyone.

Play Games/Races

What’s better than a good old bike race to get everyone moving and laughing? Along your route (where safe to do so), have races against each other. Have you thought about a family bike trip where you all compete for a prize or reward at the end? By bringing in a reward system your kids are eager to get to the finish to be rewarded. Or you could do games like stopping pedalling and seeing who can go the longest distance once pedalling has stopped. It is fun things like this that can keep your children engaged in their bike ride and keep the moaning to a minimum.  If you want to play it safe, then a game of eye spy can keep children entertained for hours.

Geocaching

Another fun activity that the whole family can enjoy while on a bike ride is geocaching. This activity has become increasingly popular over the past few years. It’s a real-life treasure hunt where users use GPS technology to “cache” hidden items around the world in virtual environments. Geocachers follow a trail of clues, find their way to the cache, and then store their find in their personal record book. Geocaching is a wonderful way to get kids out biking on their own and enjoying an activity that engages all family members.

Remember to always take snacks and drinks with you, as you will be amazed at how quickly kids need a little pick me up to keep them going.

If you are just starting to head out on your bikes then a Spring Check-Up and regular bike maintenance are a must. If you don’t have anyone who can do the bike maintenance in your household then you can take your bikes to a local bike shop for any bike maintenance and bike repairs.
