The Most Iconic Castles in Scotland

In Scotland, there are many castles that have played an important role in the country’s history. Today, they stand as a reminder of the battles won and lost in a time when knights ruled the land. Castles were built to protect people from invaders who would come into their lands looking for food or wealth. They also served as places where kings could stay while on a campaign. Scotland has plenty of iconic castles to choose from. For example, Edinburgh Castle is the most popular tourist attraction in Scotland and one of the most famous in the world. Some other popular castles include Stirling Castle and Linlithgow Palace.

Dunvegan Castle

A castle with a rich history and is run by Clan MacLeod. It was originally constructed around the 13th century but has been rebuilt several times since then. Dunvegan Castle is located on the Islay of Skye, Scotland.

Linlithgow Palace

Once home to King James I, and according to historians, was one of the largest palaces in Europe at that time. Linlithgow palace is now open to visitors and can be toured through its many rooms. Linlithgow Palace is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. She stayed here for roughly seven months before being moved to Stirling Castle.

Eilean Donan Castle

Located at the mouth of the river Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast of Scotland. It was first documented that Eilean Donan Castle was built in the 13th century during the reign of the Scottish King Alexander II. The castle has been restored over the years and today you can visit the castle and make sure to take the iconic shot of the castle.

Edinburgh Castle

The centre of Scottish history and culture sits atop a volcanic crag overlooking Edinburgh’s Old Town. This ancient fortification was originally constructed in the 12th century as a royal residence it has a long history of also being a  military garrison, prison and fortress. Today, visitors can tour the castle & grounds which include gardens, museums, restaurants, and shops.

Stirling Castle

It is said to have been used by William Wallace at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 and also the Battle of Falkirk (1298). It is now one of Scotland’s most popular tourist attractions with its impressive architecture and rich historical significance. Visitors are able to explore the castle grounds including the Great Hall, chapel, dungeons, and more.

Inverness Castle

One of the most impressive castles in Scotland is located near Inverness. There have been a number of castles built on this site. The current castle was built in 1836. Not all of the castle is open to the public though.
